Surgery for woman beaten by girlfriend

- POST REPORTERS

A woman who was violently beaten by her motorcycle helmet-wielding girlfriend in a jealous rage outside a dormitory in Bangkok suffered a fractured eye socket and will require surgery, with doctors saying she will require two months’ treatment.

Kanchana Sinprasert, 27, was arrested at a house in Sukhothai province on a court warrant on assault charges and was returned to Phahon Yothin police station in Bangkok yesterday.

The heavily built woman used her helmet to hit her girlfriend in the face and then stomped on her head and kicked her repeatedly in the face. She told police she was inebriated and acted in a fit of jealousy.

The vicious attack last Thursday was videoed by onlookers who kept telling the perpetrator to stop. It was later posted on Facebook, drawing heavy fire.

Ms Kanchana was later taken to reenact the crime at SB Place, a dormitory on Soi Ratchadaphisek 36 in Chatuchak district.

She admitted assaulting her 22-yearold girlfriend Fang (whose full name was withheld), who was sitting in front of the dormitory, at about 1.45am in view of male tenants. Another woman and man later came to her rescue.

The video clip showed the assailant shoving the victim and then using her crash helmet to strike her with full force. The attacker dragged the victim by the hair and pummelled her head into the ground several times.

Metropolitan Police Bureau deputy commissioner Sompong Chingduang said the woman would be urine tested for narcotics, which could lead to additional charges.

Ms Kanchana was due to appear at the Criminal Court today, with police seeking to detain her for another 12 days pending completion of their probe. They planned to oppose bail due to the gravity of the offence.

The current charge against her carries a penalty of six months to 10 years in jail and/or a maximum fine of 200,000 baht.

Fang’s family said yesterday they will file a police complaint against Ms Kanchana.

The suspect has reportedly promised to pay her medical bills and compensation.
