Fluidity on stage with American dance troupe
The Friends of the Arts Foundation presents Holding Space by Dana Lawton Dances (DLD) from the US at the auditorium of Bangkok Arts and Culture Centre, Pathumwan intersection, on Aug 8 at 7pm.
This is the newest work by the Oakland-based dance company whose “Fluid Tour” will be in the Kingdom next month. Comprising a series of performances and workshops, it is part of their debut Asian tour.
Holding Space is an evening concert featuring selections from the company’s acclaimed performances — Beyond This Moment (2012), Home (2015) and its most recent 10th Anniversary Show (2017). The works presented in this show span the emotional spectrum from poignant, sentimental dances to lighthearted romps.
The 10-member multi-generational company highlights the unique perspective of the rich multiplicity of human lives, provides the audience with a new perspective on what constitutes a dancer, and inspires people to re-imagine what is possible at any age.
Comprising dancers of different ages, the company is under the direction of Dana Lawton, a tenured associate professor at St Mary’s College of California. She is also a faculty member of the Shawl-Anderson Dance Center and a co-director of the Enchanted Ridge Dance Retreat.
Lawton will conduct a contemporary dance workshop at Racquet Club’s studio, Sukhumvit 49, on Aug 9 starting at 6.30pm. The company will then engage in a oneweek residency at the Dance Centre School of Performing Arts and International School of Bangkok.
Tickets for the Aug 8 performance cost 700 baht (1,500 baht for VIP tickets) and tickets for the workshop cost 600 baht. They can be purchased from ticketmelon.com.
