THE WORLD UNITED

- — Phitchaya Thongthai

The Tham Luang cave rescue hit the world with a whirlwind of panic and terror. For better or for worse, Thailand was put on the global stage. The story of the 12 lost boys and their coach found its way into people’s hearts, with countries all over the globe sending marines, technology and hope to Thailand. It is a story of humanity at its best. The storybook Kai Hua Ror: The World United Loak Ruam Jai Na Jai Klang Tham or roughly translated to For Laughs Edition: The World United At The Heart Of The Cave, aims to document the the positivity of this dark time. Instead of publicising the horror and fear, Kai Hua Ror is showing the unity of the world through art. Kai Hua Ror has gathered heavyweight artists, such as Tai Kai Hua Ror, and others across Thailand to create a cartoon photo book. They are completed with coloured pencils that are reminiscent of a child’s drawing. The illustrations depict men and women at work, comical remedies, and most importantly, global unity. Each drawing details the Wild Boars’ fleeting, moments of happiness, the kindness and aid from neighbouring and far reaching countries. It is a thank you letter to those who prayed, hoped, engineered, dove, aided and sacrificed for this seemingly impossible mission. The comic strips depict superheroes with masks venturing towards the cave. As they are preparing to “fight”, they find that there are other men and women who have already begun. An important message is delivered in this lighthearted manner — that almost everyone gathered to help. Multitudes of people have all played a part, be it Australian divers and medics, Belgian and Canadian diving experts, a Chinese rescue team and equipment, Danish and Finnish divers, Indian and Dutch pump experts, an Israeli diver, Japanese divers and engineers who helped pump out the water in the cave, Vientiane Rescue experts, Russian emergency specialists, British and American divers who put forth their efforts in helping 13 people out of that cave. The rescue was cited as a “mission impossible”, but with the efforts of the world it became possible. The Tham Luang incident makes for another special edition in Kai Hua Ror’s roster, among other collectable issues such as the tribute edition to King Rama IX.
