Officials put $154k into wrong Fleetwood account

-

ST LOUIS: Britain’s Tommy Fleetwood earned US$154,000 for sharing 12th place at the British Open, but reports on Wednesday showed the money was paid to American Tommy Fleetwood, club pro at a Florida resort.

The bizarre situation came to light on the eve of the 100th PGA Championship, where 11th-ranked Fleetwood will try to win his first major title at Bellerive Country Club.

A tweet from @GregThornerGolf showed the payout from his friend’s account, which showed a transfer for the funds from Barclays Bank last Friday into the account of the Floridian Fleetwood.

In an e-mail to Golf Digest, Englishman Fleetwood’s wife Clare confirmed the situation was true and that Fleetwood’s managers are in the process of getting their man his money.

According to t he report, she described the direct deposit blunder as a “huge clerical error by the European Tour accounts department”.

But as any good golfer would, the American Fleetwood reported the rules violation, calling the bank’s attention to the error.

“I told him he should keep it,” Thorner told USA TODAY. “He said, ‘No, no no.’ He called the bank.”
