PLAYING IN THE DARK
A LIFE IN SHADOWS / RATCHADAMNOEN CONTEMPORARY ART CENTER / AUG 3-26
Understanding the pressure traditional art forms face to remain relevant in today’s society, Australian photographer Constantine Korsovitis feels the need to shed light on the shadow theatres in Southeast Asia and the lives of the performers through his photo series. Despite the cultural differences, Southeast Asian countries like Thailand, Cambodia and Malaysia still share common religious, linguistic and racial aspects, including shadow theatre. And they use the Ramayana and Mahabharata as sources. As part of the Photo Bangkok 2018 festival, “A Life In Shadows” documentary photo exhibition manifests the dedication of artists who work behind the scene. Korsovitis hopes that the show will raise awareness and appreciation for the art form in the region and around the world.
