1 in 5 motorbikes breaks speed limit
BANGKOK: Early findings from traffic data collected by new partnership-supported cameras to reduce road deaths show that one in five motorcyclists drives above the speed limit.
Information was obtained from 10 new speed cameras in three accidentprone areas of the city — namely Chalong Krung Road and Romklao Road in Lat Krabang district and Chaloem Phrakiat Ratchakan Tee Kao Road in Prawet district.
The programme is a collaboration between the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and Bloomberg Philanthropies Partnership for Healthy Cities. Bangkok is one of 54 cities involved in the scheme.
According to the a report published by WHO in 2015, Thailand’s roads are ranked as the second deadliest in the world. The report found that 83% of traffic deaths in Thailand are suffered by pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists — much higher than the global average of 49%.
