Police condemned to life in Thai League 2

- TOR CHITTINAND

Police Tero were relegated yesterday after losing 4-2 at Navy in Thai League 1 last night.

Indeed, the result was irrelevant after Sukhothai held hosts Ratchaburi to a scoreless draw.

Air Force Central, Ubon UMT and Navy had already earned tickets to Thai League 2 with five teams going down to the second tier at the end of the season.

With one round of matches remaining this weekend, Sukhothai, who have 40 points, and Chainat, on 39 points, will fight to survive in the top flight.

Chainat yesterday could manage only a goalless draw with Bangkok United.

On Sunday, Chainat will travel to Suphanburi and Sukhothai are at home to bottom club Air Force Central.

Thai League 2 sides PTT Rayong, Trat and Chiang Mai will be promoted to Thai League 1 next year.

At Sattahip last night, Police Tero got off to a fast start as Kritprom Boonsarn opened the scoring after just two minutes only for Vitor Junior to equalise before the interval.

Amadou Ouattara gave the hosts the lead in the 58th minute and Marcos Vinicius made it 2-2 from the penalty spot with 20 minutes to go.

Police Tero ran out of steam in the closing stages as Navy’s Chontawat Srisuk scored two unanswered goals to hand the visitors their sixth straight loss.

Police Tero have won the league title twice in 2000 and 2002 when they were BEC Tero.

The Dragons also won the Thai League Cup in 2014 and reached the Asian Champions League final in 2003.

In yesterday’s other matches, it’s SCG Muang Thong United 5 Pattaya United 5; Port 5 Chonburi 0; Nakhon Ratchasima 1 Chiang Rai United 1; Bangkok Glass 1 Ubon UMT 1; PT Prachuap 0 Suphanburi FC 1; and Air Force 2 Buriram United 4.
