PUTTING AN END TO PLAS­TIC BAGS

Twenty-two fresh mar­kets and depart­ment stores in this north­east­ern prov­ince are tak­ing part in a pi­lot project aimed at cut­ting down on the use of plas­tic bags and sty­ro­foam con­tain­ers, which started on Oct 1.

Free cloth bags are given out to ven­dors at the mar­kets to pro­vide food to their cus­tomers in. Cus­tomers are then ex­pected to use the bags ev­ery time they visit the mar­kets. The prov­ince in­tends to af­ter this ex­pand the project to cover all 26 dis­tricts of it.

Khon Kaen mu­nic­i­pal­ity and other or­gan­i­sa­tions con­cerned are re­spon­si­ble for pro­duc­ing cloth bags and dis­tribut­ing them free of charge to the par­ties tak­ing part in the project.
