Winner of this year’s RBSO Violin Competition to perform this weekend
Under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana, the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra Foundation is presenting its inaugural winner of the RBSO Violin Competition 2018 at the Chulalongkorn University Auditorium on Saturday Nov 24 at 8pm. After a hotly contested competition consisting of two challenging rounds that showcased the impressive pool of talent that currently exists among young Thai musicians, violinist Nattawat Luantampol was ultimately selected as winner by the panel of judges. Among those who had the difficult job of choosing just one winner from such a strong field was regular RBSO conductor Vanich Potavanich, who will direct the celebration concert. Nattawat’s chosen piece for the featured concerto is Violin Concerto No.2 In D Minor Opus 22 by Henryk Wieniawski. The Polish composer wrote the tuneful but demanding work to suit his own considerable instrumental technique and romantic sensibilities. It has always been an audience favourite. Nattawat has already amassed a wealth of stage experience at home and abroad. His appearance in this special concert promises to be one of the highlights of this year’s concert season in Bangkok. An active member of the Thai Youth Orchestra, he was appointed their concertmaster from 2011 to 2014, also appearing with them a number of times as soloist. Such was the impression he made on the musical community in Bangkok, he was invited to play as section violinist with the RBSO in 2014-2015. He then continued his artistic studies in Singapore at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) School of Music on a full scholarship. He completed the course with Distinction, also receiving the coveted Ngee Ann Kongsi Gold Medal awarded to the best graduate of 2018. He continues to study on full scholarship with the partner-institution, the Royal College of Music in London, under the tutelage of Foo Say Ming, head of strings at NAFA in Singapore. “The Winner of the RBSO Violin Competition 2018” concert will begin with Schubert’s Overture In The Italian Style D. 590 and, following the featured concerto, will conclude with Beethoven’s Symphony No.2 In D Major Opus 36. The RBSO classical concert presenting the winner of the RBSO Violin Competition 2018 takes place on Saturday at Chulalongkorn University Auditorium.
