For­eign teacher nabbed over rapes

A English-lan­guage teacher from Pak­istan was ar­rested yes­ter­day on sus­pi­cion of rape after the par­ents of sev­eral young fe­male stu­dents filed po­lice com­plaints against him ear­lier in the week. Pol Lt Gen Su­rachate Hak­parn, the chief of the Im­mi­gra­tion Bureau, said the par­ents first con­tacted Lam Luk Ka Po­lice Sta­tion in Pathum Thani. Of­fi­cers then got in touch with im­mi­gra­tion po­lice to gather ev­i­dence and wit­nesses be­fore seek­ing a court war­rant. The man, whose name was with­held, was ar­rested at his house in Lam Luk Ka dis­trict and taken for ques­tion­ing. Pol Lt Gen Su­rachate said the sus­pect de­nied the al­le­ga­tion. He claimed to be a US cit­i­zen of Pak­istani eth­nic­ity who has been liv­ing in Thai­land for over two decades and is mar­ried to a Thai woman. He also claimed to have a doc­tor­ate de­gree in psy­chol­ogy. Pol Lt Gen Su­rachate said any for­eign­ers who com­mit a crime in the king­dom would have their visas re­voked and be sub­ject to Thai law.
