Joy for Buriram, grief for Muang Thong and Gama

Defending champions Buriram United tamed hosts Port 3-1 in an encounter marred by heated exchanges and nearscuffl­es to wrest the Thai League 1 top spot from their opponents.

Port were hoping to retain their place at the top when Sergio Suarez cancelled out Buriram’s first-half strike from the spot by Andres Tunez.

However, Pedro Junior (55th minute) and Chitipat Tanklang (63rd) ensured that Buriram finished the game one point ahead of Port in the table.

Alexandre Gama’s first game incharge of SCG Muang Thong United ended in a 2-0 loss at Chonburi as the former champions Kirins slumped back to the last spot in the league.

Meanwhile in other games last night, True Bangkok United picked up three important points with the help of a 2-0 victory over visiting Ratchaburi.

Bangkok United got their first goal in the 56th minute from Vander Luis and then saw their goalkeeper Michael Falkesgaar­d pull off a spectacula­r save to deny Ratchaburi’s Steeven Langil.

Bangkok United had a stroke of luck as they picked up another goal in the last minute when Ratchaburi defender Pawee Tantatemee guided the ball into his own net.

Chiangmai suffered a 2-0 defeat at home at the hands of PTT Rayong.

Apiwat Pengprakho­n opened the scoring for the visitors in the 43rd minute. Supasek Kaikaew added the second to the tally five minutes from time.

In Saturday night’s late game, a Leandro Assumpcao brace took hosts Nakhon Ratchasima to a 2-1 victory over Chainat.
