Courier falls down manhole into sewer

- POST REPORTERS

A courier fell through a broken manhole cover into a sewer shaft in Huai Khwang district of the capital yesterday.

The district office said that it has already sent workers to repair the manhole cover.

Jetnipit Photkaew, 23, a Kerry Express courier, fell into the shaft after stepping on the broken manhole cover near Ratchadaphisek MRT station about 8.30am yesterday morning.

Ms Jetnipit said that she was walking along the pavement with her friends when she accidentally stumbled on the broken cover, which immediately gave way — causing her to fall through it. She injured her arms, hands and shoulders falling down the concrete shaft.

She also said she was almost submerged in sewer water for a while, before she was pulled out by a nearby vendor and a motorcycle taxi driver.

After Ms Jetnipit was rescued, she was taken to a nearby hospital on Phahon Yothin Road, where her wounds were dressed before she was released.

Acting Huai Khwang district chief, Niphon Poolchako, said his office has paid for Ms Jetnipit’s medical bills, and given her 20,000 baht in cash to replace the mobile phone she lost in the fall.

Ms Jetnipit said she did not intend to pursue legal action against Huai Khwang district office.

Mr Niphon added that on Monday evening, inspectors had surveyed the pavements along Ratchadaphisek Road and saw the broken manhole cover — which they had marked with a fluorescent traffic cone to warn pedestrians.
