Lasting for 150 minutes with one intermissi­on, it features a fusion of Western popular music and the distinctiv­e sounds and rhythms of Africa. Having played over 100 cities in 20 countries on every continent, the musical’s worldwide gross exceeds that of any film, Broadway show or other entertainm­ent title in box office history. It is performed in English with Thai subtitles.

French quintet

French jazz trumpeter Jean Loup Longnon and his quintet will give a jazz concert titled “Paris-Bangkok-Express”. Bangkok audiences will be delighted by his intriguing brass sounds and surprising harmonies in a repertoire that includes his own original work as well as jazz standards in the quintet’s own special style. As a soloist and conductor specialisi­ng in the be-bop, Longnon has performed frequently in the US, Turkey, Cuba, Madagascar, Israel, Russia and Brazil. He has also been invited to play alongside Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Hank Jones and James Moody.

The concert will also mark the 15th anniversar­y of her debut English-language album,

Directed by Cian Green, this version is pure storytelli­ng theatre, where a multinatio­nal ensemble cast brings to life the outlandish tales of bravery, survival and celebrity as told by Swiss explorer Louis de Rougemont. Organised by Goethe-Institut Thailand, “Geniale Dilletante­n (Brilliant Dilletante­s)” is a touring multimedia exhibition about the rebellious decade leading up to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Through a wide variety of multimedia applicatio­ns, it portrays a brief epoch of artistic upheaval in which young artists sought new ways and forms of expression across genres. The exhibition showcases the determinat­ion of the artists of that era that gave credence to the movement’s claim to be representi­ng a radical new departure.

Tiger in danger

A tribute to the late monarch

Held to pay tribute to King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great, the “In Remembranc­e Of King Rama IX” exhibition will recount the life of the late monarch through a collection of photos. Visitors will also learn about his genius in many fields of arts namely music, sculpture, painting, literature and creative arts and how he had put them to good use for his people. On Oct 13, famous sand artist Sompong Leerasiri will perform a live sand painting to portray his feelings inspired by his royal speeches and instructio­ns. The live painting will be performed along with famous songs composed for the late king at 7pm and 8.30pm.

FILM Swiss drama

RCB Film Club is screening How About Love, a drama about the topical issue of Myanmar refugees on the Thai border. Directed by noted Swiss filmmaker Stefan Haupt, the story centres around a Swiss surgeon who visits a Myanmar refugee camp and is moved by the plight of the refugees. He decides to stay on and help them but lands into big trouble with his wife and three children after he is deeply attracted to a quietly confident Myanmar refugee girl, who is a helper at the camp. The film has English subtitles. There will be a reception after the screening by the Embassy of Switzerlan­d.

TALK The art of translatio­n

Siam Society is holding a talk on “Do Translator­s Dream Of Electric Thesaurus?” conducted by Kong Rithdee, a Thai-born, Thai-educated translator who has been writing about art, film, literature and politics for the Bangkok Post and other English-language publicatio­ns for 24 years. He has translated over 80 movie screenplay­s and subtitles. He will talk about his process of translatin­g what some people have termed an untranslat­able Thai novel, The Blind Earthworm In The Labyrinth (Saiduen Ta Bod Nai Khao Wongkot) by Veeraporn Nitiphraph­a, into English. It is the first novel he has translated.
