CHIANG MAI: A man, charged with killing his six-day-old daughter by forcing her to ingest toilet cleaning liquid on Wednesday, was taken for a re-enactment of the crime in Muang district yesterday.

Aye, 45, was arrested on Wednesday in the province on suspicion of murdering his infant daughter, Bee.

Police interviewed the infant’s mother who said Mr Aye was disappointed the child was born a girl. He felt the pressure, coming from an ethnic Chinese family, to have a son to carry on the family name as his two other children are both girls.

The mother said that while she was pregnant, Mr Aye had tried to talk her into having an abortion.

The mother added her husband had taken the infant to see his relatives on Wednesday morning and returned in the evening to say the girl had died.

On Wednesday afternoon, he had taken the infant to a restaurant car park in downtown Chiang Mai where he forced toilet cleaner down her throat until the infant suffocated, according to Chang Puek police.

Mr Aye had buried the infant in the grounds of a burial site in Ban Mai Rim Klong of Doi Saket district. Police charged him with murder and hiding a corpse.

Yesterday, after Mr Aye allegedly admitted to police he had killed the child, he was taken to the downtown car park and then to the burial ground in tambon Luang Nue where the crime was re-enacted.

Mr Aye told police he could not get over the disappointment of having a third girl in the family. He said he was now left distraught and felt remorseful that he had murdered his own daughter.

Pol Lt Col Chakri Wongkham, deputy chief of Chang Puek station, said the suspect was questioned by investigators who found he had no family feud or financial problems.
