DeJong blasts 2 homers in St Louis’ rout of Nationals

Paul DeJong hit a grand slam and a solo homer, and the visiting St Louis Cardinals beat the Washington Nationals 12-5 in Major League Baseball on Monday.

Tommy Edman, Paul Goldschmid­t and Justin Williams also homered for the Cardinals, who were shut out 2-0 in Philadelph­ia on Sunday.

Cardinals starter Jack Flaherty (3-0) allowed five runs (two earned) on six hits over six innings. He struck out five.

Joe Ross (1-1), who was unscored on in 11 innings coming in, was roughed up for 10 runs on eight hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings.

At Seattle, Jose Marmolejos and Taylor Trammell hit home runs as the Mariners edged the Dodgers 4-3.

Corey Seager homered for the Dodgers, who took their second consecutiv­e defeat after an eight-game winning streak.

Mariners left-hander Justus Sheffield (1-1) allowed three runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out six.

At Anaheim, Texas got 5 2/3 scoreless innings from Kohei Arihara and produced a five-run sixth inning en route to beating the Angels 6-4.

Arihara, in his first year in the majors after six seasons in the Japanese Pacific League, gave up just two hits, both singles by David Fletcher. He struck out six and walked two.

The Angels rallied for four runs in the seventh inning against the Texas bullpen, getting a home run from Justin Upton and RBI singles from Albert Pujols and Kurt Suzuki. Another run scored on a wild pitch.

At Kansas City, Tampa Bay pitchers shut down the Kansas City offence as the Rays won 4-1 on a blustery, cold night in the first game of a threegame series. The Royals managed just five hits.

Starting pitcher Josh Fleming (1-1) allowed no runs on two hits in 5 1/3 innings for Tampa Bay, lowering his ERA to 0.87.
