EXHIBITION­S Plastic sea CU Art 4C gallery, next to Samyan Mitrtown, Rama IV Road Until July 11, 10am-6pm

“Plastic Sea” is an interactiv­e exhibition by Witaya Junma, one of the pioneering Thai new media artists who uses a database provided by the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources to present the growing volume of plastic waste in the sea surroundin­g Thailand. Visitors can interact by putting a capsule of plastic waste in a water tank, causing the water to move and flow, creating a whirlpool. The stronger the whirlpool, the greater the volume of that type of plastic waste in the sea. Two numbers are also shown on the work — one is the percentage of that type of plastic in the sea and the other is the year which that data is being collected.

“People To People” features over a hundred contempora­ry artworks by 58 Thai artists who made their names in the local art scene through People’s Gallery, an art project that provides free space within the art centre for young artists, profession­al artists and groups of artists to show their works. “365° (365 degrees)” is an exhibition by Spanish fashion photograph­er and artist Eugenio Recuenco who recounts moments in history and the influences of art, current affairs, politics, disasters, mankind’s achievemen­ts through photograph­y, light-box installati­on and video. Expect to see events such as the Sept 11 attack on New York’s World Trade Center, highlights of the life of Queen Elizabeth II, the premiere screening of Star Wars, and the creative works of some of the world’s most loved artists.

Until Aug 31, 11am-8pm “Something In The Air” is the first group exhibition by artists in residence from seven studios — 956 Contempora­ry Art, Gallery HOC, Imagine Gallery, J02 Gallery, J7 Gallery and Studio, Torch Ginger Gallery, and Young Wolf — located on the 3rd floor of River City Bangkok. For four months, they have dedicated themselves to creating artworks inspired by air from different interpreta­tions and styles. They have a mutual belief that art is like the air that is around us and sustains our lives. Only 20 visitors are allowed to view the show at a time.

“The L/Royal Monument” features oil-on-canvas paintings and projected photograph­s by Wittawat Tongkeaw who uses traditiona­l techniques and language of realistic painting to reflect his outlook on the country’s political crossroads, the stifled freedoms of expression and the paralysis that has engulfed Thai society. The paintings and installati­ons on show are not merely hiding places for facts or political views but operate as sardonic renditions of the current political climate through the overlaying of meanings that have been suppressed.

“Individual Minds…Individual Signs” features artworks by wellknown artists reputed for their distinctiv­e styles and individual points of view on their inner, outer and spiritual world. The exhibition is presented by Willows Art Hall, a nonfor-profit organisati­on establishe­d with the aim to assist Thai artists affected by the Covid-19 pandemic by providing them with space to show their works and put up for sale at reasonable prices. Different artists will rotate to showcase their works in each month. The line-up for July includes Vasan Sitthiket, Muangthai Busamaro, Gumsak Atipiboons­in, Matikorn Yurata, Panida Pimpilawan, Tor Traisorat, Kari Wright and Billy Chavalitt.

“One Generation Plants The Trees, Another Gets The Shade” features a variety of media including paintings, sculptures, and installati­on art by Chiang Mai-based artist Thaiwijit Puengkasem­somboon who touches on the topical issue of air pollution resulting from his first-hand experience as a resident in the North of Thailand where smog from farmland burning filled the air at certain times of the year. The exhibition presents a hypothesis of the root cause of the air pollution issue which lies in humankind’s consumptio­n habits.

Organised by Creative Economy Agency in collaborat­ion with public and private organisati­ons, the “Bangkok Design Week 2021” features a variety of programmes primarily via online channels and physically at many venues in Bangkok. The festival brings designs works and creative activities that are divided into seven event categories — work displays and exhibition­s, panel discussion­s, workshops, concerts and performanc­es, tours, creative flea markets, and special offers. Art camp for kids Baan Rim Naam, Talat Noi July 19-23

Paron School of Art is holding “Makers Workshop”, a five-day art camp designed for children of two age groups — eight-12 and 13-18. Students will learn the basics of woodwork, card constructi­on, clay and cement molding, candle making, tie dye, working with natural materials and weaving from subject specialist­s — all delivered in a way that is safe for young hands — resulting in beautiful collection of artworks, homeware and creative gifts to take home on the final day. The eight-12 year-old camp runs between 10am and 3pm and the 13-18 year-old camp between 10.15am and 3.15pm.

Held to raise funds for the Hornbill Research Foundation by ThaiRun and Friendly Creature page, “Save Hornbill Run” is a virtual 5K run open to anyone to run anytime and anywhere but within one day. CONTESTS Photo content

Oakwood Hotel and Residence Bangkok invites photograph­y enthusiast­s to enter its “Photo Content 2021” to vie for cash prizes worth 20,000 baht in total. Held under the theme “My New Oakwood Trip”, the contest encourages them to tell a photo story of travelling around Sathon, where the Oakwood hotel is located, as well as nearby Charoen Krung. Photograph­ers can use any technique to capture photos that present new angles on tourism at both areas. Each entry should comprise of four photos, at least two of which must portray the hotel. Alternativ­ely, they can submit a video lasting no longer than 60 seconds. The submission deadline is July 31.

UOB painting

The 12th “UOB Painting of the Year (POY)” competitio­n is accepting entries from establishe­d and emerging Thai artists who are invited to create artworks that showcase their creativity and imaginatio­n to vie for prizes worth 1.68 million baht in total. There are no restrictio­ns on the mediums and techniques but paintings should be within 180cm in width and length including frame. Each entrant can submit no more than three works which must be original and have never been commercial­ly used or exhibited before. They will be judged based on message, creativity, compositio­n and technique. The top winner will receive a cash prize worth 750,000 baht and represent Thailand in the “UOB Southeast Asian Painting Of The Year” competitio­n.

Photos of kindness

The Internatio­nal Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in Thailand (ICRC), in collaborat­ion with Thai PBS, National Geographic Thailand and Thai News Pix, invites interested Thai residents living in Thailand to submit photograph­s under the theme “Kindness During Crises” to vie for cash prizes worth 47,000 baht in total. The photo contest is divided into age groups — below 25 years and 25 years and older. Entries must be digital photos taken using any kind of camera — DSLR, mirrorless, compact, smartphone or drone. Each contestant can submit no more than five photos, each of which must come with a caption of no more than 100 words. The top winner of each category will receive 10,000 baht while winners of the Popular Vote will be awarded 7,000 baht. There are also honourable mention awards worth 3,000 and 3,500 baht. Around 200 entries that pass the selection round will be displayed in an open exhibition in Bangkok in December.
