Hand-woven Thai belts for champions
WBC Muay Thai has created a championship belt in honour of legendary Muay Thai fighter Nai Khanom Tom, the organisation said yesterday.
The belt is a collaborative effort between WBC Muay Thai and Doi Tung to showcase the Kingdom’s hand-woven fabric and Muay Thai as its national cultural heritage.
WBC Muay Thai, which is under the World Boxing Council (WBC), has a mission to promote Muay Thai as one of the world’s leading combat sports.
In collaboration with the Doi Tung Development Project, which is under the Mae Fah Luang Foundation, WBC Muay Thai has created the Nai Khanom Tom championship belt to popularise the unique martial art that is taking the world by storm.
In order to illustrate the extraordinary beauty of the Thai woven fabric, the pattern used in the Nai Khanom Tom championship belt was exclusively designed by Doi Tung, employing a hand-woven technique.
The belt will be given to winners who win the national championship of each country.
Col Thanapol Bhakdibhumi, executive secretary of WBC Muay Thai, said Muay Thai is not only the country’s national sport but also a worldwide phenomenon that has gained increasing interest internationally.
“WBC Muay Thai and Doi Tung have agreed that the partnership will further help popularise Muay Thainad and Thai culture worldwide,” he said.
ML Dispanadda Diskul, CEO of Mae Fah Luang Foundation, said the Nai Khanom Tom championship belt is a perfect combination between Thailand’s culture and sport, and has a timeless design.
