DSDW to help resolve challenges Lawa people face

-

Kitti Intarakul, deputy director-general of the Department of Social Development and Welfare (DSDW), and Uthen Chanakul, director of Welfare Protection and Quality of Life Promotion Division, recently visited the Lawa community in Bangkok. Kitti said that the Lawa people are originally from Chiang Rai but many of them have migrated to the central region of Thailand for work. There are about 3,500 Lawa living in Thawi Watthana and Bang Kae districts and they are employed at orchid farms and construction sites. Sam Tabo, the community head, informed Kitti that most of them don’t have ID numbers, which prevents them from receiving due services from the government such as healthcare and education. Kitti added that DSDW, Ministry of Social Development and Human Security and members of Lawa community will gather information on the challenges that the ethnic group face in order to help them.
