Bangkok United edge Sharks in close duel

- TOR CHITTINAND

True Bangkok United continued their impressive run in Thai League 1 with a 1-0 home victory over Chonburi last night.

Bangkok United have been enjoying a good start under coach Totchtawan Sripan and have emerged as the early title contenders.

Bangkok United’s Totsawat Limwannasatian opened the ball for Heberty Fernandes but the Brazilian shot the ball wide in the 30th minute of the Sharks’ goal.

Vander Luiz sealed three points for the hosts shortly after the hour mark as the capital side recorded their fifth win of the season after seven outings so far.

Meanwhile, Police Tero pulled off a dramatic 2-2 home draw as they shattered Ratchaburi’s hopes of claiming full points from the match last night.

Police took the field on the back of giant-killing victories over Chonburi and defending champions BG Pathum United in their past two games.

However, Kasitdej Wechayawong gave Ratchaburi the upper hand shortly before the half-hour mark which forced the hosts to go all-out on the offensive.

Things would have been easier for Police had not Chalermsak Aukkee guided a Sanrawat Dechmitr shot into his own net, helping the visitors double their lead in the 54th minute.

Police fired close to a dozen shots at Ratchaburi’s goal but only Lesley Ablorh’s header produced the desired result to help them pull one back in the 71st minute, when the Ghanaian was set up by a curling free-kick from Ekkachai Sumre.

Police desperately searched for the equaliser and one uncharacteristic lapse on the part of Ratchaburi defence produced the leveller seven minutes into injury time.

A Police player was fouled inside the box and the match referee awarded the penalty after consulting the VAR. Evandro Silva kept his cool and salvaged a point for the home team, converting from the spot.

At Chiangmai’s 700th Anniversary Stadium, hosts Chiangmai United lost 1-0 PT Prachuap in Saturday night’s late game.

Thanin Plodkaew scored the winning goal in the 77th minute for Prachuap.
