HEALTH: The Department of Health has pledged to work with 22 agencies to encourage people to eat 300 eggs a year in 2023.

At present, egg consumption in the country stands at 233 eggs per person per year, which is far behind developed countries in Asia including China at 399, Japan at 345 and Malaysia at 314, department Director-General Dr Suwannachai Wattanayingcharoenchai told media yesterday.

“Eggs are highly nutritious and particularly good for brain health as it improves cognition among both children and adults,” he said.

To boost consumption by 28%, the department will work with 22 agencies including the department of local administration, the department of internal trade and the government’s Egg Board to promote consumption nationwide, especially in schools. It plans to encourage schools to serve a daily egg dish for students’ lunch.
