Big purse for returning Thailand Open at Riverdale
The Thailand Open is making a return next week after it was cancelled last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, organisers said yesterday.
The 49th edition of the prestigious tournament will be held at Riverdale Golf Club in Pathum Thani from Oct 28-31 and offers a total purse of 10 million baht, Thailand Golf Association president Rangsrid Luxitanond said.
“This is Thailand’s most lucrative local tournament,” he said.
The tournament is backed by the Tourism and Sports Ministry, the Sports Authority of Thailand and several private companies including Singha Corporation and Plan B.
The event is being held under strict Covid-19 protocols, Rangsrid said.
The Thailand Open is the country’s oldest professional golf tournament which was established in 1965.
The winner will receive the trophy donated by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great.
A large number of the country’s top players have confirmed participation in this year’s tournament, including 2017 champion Rattanon Wannasrichan, 2018 winner Panuphol Pittayarat, Prom Meesawat and Sadom Kaewkanjana.
RAHM OFF FOR 4 WEEKS
US Open champion Jon Rahm said he is going to take four weeks to rejuvenate after missing the cut at the Andalucia Masters in his native Spain.
“This is the first time in my life that I don’t want to see a golf club,” the world No.1 said.
“And this comes from someone who loves this sport, and after a year in which some pretty good things have happened to me.”
The seven-over 78 he recorded last Thursday tied his worst round as a professional, and he finished 16 strokes behind Matthew Fitzpatrick.
Rahm, 26, said he simply needs a mental refresher.
