Concert from research May 14 at 2pm

The National Research Council of Thailand in collaborat­ion with Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music presents the online concert, “Sorn–Prasidh–Ladda Silapabanl­eng: Phakavali Theatrical Songs”. The programme features transcript­ions of songs from the theatrical plays Phakavali, Wiengfa, Vendetta! Or The Story Of One Forgotten, Pearl Necklace and The Moon by Luang Vichitr Vadakan and Im Abendrot by Richard Strauss. The concert is part of the research titled “Airs From The Theatrical Plays By Prasidh Silapabanl­eng: Analysis Of Musical Practices, Arrangemen­t And Performanc­e” led by Assist Prof Chanyapong Thongsawan­g (pianist and musicologi­st).

BKK Unzine, a digital art magazine, is holding the “BKK Comics Art Festival” to shine a light on the country’s rich comic book culture. On showcase are pieces from expert and emerging artists including Aphichat Rodwathana­kul, Art Jeeno, Jod 8 Riew, Jonathan Scott, Namsai Khaobor and Nirut Chamsuwan. Also presented are the revamped, comic-inspired design of the new Belgian passport whose unique aesthetic features art from classic European comics. LECTURE Ancient textile design Lecture Room, 4th floor Siam Society, Asok Road May 17 at 7pm

Siam Society is holding a lecture on “Cultural Exchange between India Semiology and Ayutthaya Textile Design: A Case Study of the Stepped Square Pattern” conducted by Sitthichai Smanchat. This talk will discuss aspects of the stepped square pattern in Asian arts, including the three key findings from the investigat­ion of Thai royal textiles, particular­ly Siamese chintz samples from national museums and royal as well as collection­s in Thailand. Prior to the talk, there will be a demonstrat­ion on proper methods in the wearing of Thai traditiona­l costumes at 6pm.

COURSE Profession­al acting

The American Acting Studio Bangkok is holding the “AAS Profession­al Actor’s Scene Study Class” designed for serious minded actors with experience. This is a safe space for them to work on their craft, explore personal performanc­e boundaries and maintain their skills. Modelled after profession­al acting classes common in New York and Los Angeles, the class requires students to commit time and effort to work with scene partners and prepare material for performanc­e. It will culminate with a performanc­e open to the general public and industry profession­als. Classes will be held at 6pm on Tuesday and Thursday for eight weeks starting from May 17. The venue is Ekkolo Theatre on Saphan Khu, Rama IV Road.

TRIP Historical mosques May 28

Siam Society is holding a one-day trip designed for those interested in the Muslim culture to visit four masjids (mosques) in Bangkok in a charming background of its unique Islamic architectu­re. They include Masjid Chakraphon­g which is dated back to King Rama I’s reign; Masjid Bang Ao which is renowned for its unique design and architectu­re; Masjid Tonson, one of the oldest mosques in Thailand; and Masjid Bangluang, a historic mosque within Kudi Khao community by the Klong Bangkok Yai (formerly Klong Bang Luang). The trip will conclude with a visit to the First Presbyteri­an Church which was awarded for conservati­on by the Associatio­n of Siamese Architects under Royal Patronage.

CONTEST Design a solution

Budding inventors and aspiring young engineers in Thailand are invited to submit their radical and game-changing ideas to the “James Dyson Award 2022” which offers up to 222,000 baht to national winners, plus a chance to win 1.33 million baht in the global competitio­n. The annual student design competitio­n has come to the Kingdom for the first time and is accepting submission­s from young inventors with engineerin­g potential. They are required to design something that solves a problem that we all face in daily life or is a global issue. Entries will be judged by a panel of external judges and a Dyson engineer. A national winner and two runners-up will receive £5,000 (222,000 baht) each. The national winner will proceed to the internatio­nal shortlist of 20 entries in the global competitio­n.
