- WASSANA NANUAM

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon has conveyed his thanks to Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and National Defence Minister Tea Banh for his cooperation in suppressing transnational call-centre scam gangs, Defence Ministry spokesman Gen Kongcheep Tantravanich said yesterday.

Gen Prawit and Deputy Defence Minister Chaichan Changmongkol attended the 16th Asean Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) in Phnom Penh, where Gen Prawit met Gen Tea Banh to discuss ways to strengthen the security of both countries and forge closer ties within Asean.

Gen Kongcheep said Gen Prawit also thanked Cambodia for helping to take care of Thais in that country and maintaining security along the common border.

Gen Tea Banh in turn thanked the Thais for supporting Cambodia’s bid to host the ADMM and stressed bilateral collaboration to boost the region’s strength as it contends with the fallout from economic and political tensions around the world.

Speaking in his capacity as director of the Police Cyber Taskforce (PCT), Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittiprapas, the deputy national police chief, said the PCT unit has cooperated with its Cambodian counterpart in cracking down on a call centre gang in the coastal province of Preah Sihanouk and arrested 21 offenders.

Pol Gen Damrongsak said raids were launched at noon on Tuesday in two locations — the Jing Cheng Hotel and a casino on Pulowai Road — where the gang members, including Thai nationals, were collared.

A probe found the gang had duped victims into investing in a fraudulent cryptocurrency trade using Tinder.
