Six-run fifth inning helps Padres rally past Brewers

MILWAUKEE: Rookie Jackson Merrill singled home two runs during a six-run fifth inning as the visiting San Diego Padres opened a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers with a 7-3 win on Monday.

San Diego starter Joe Musgrove (2-2) allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings. He walked four and struck out three.

The Brewers loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth before Robert Suarez retired Sal Frelick on a fly ball to left field for his sixth save.

Merrill, who had three hits and a stolen base, is 9-for-17 over his past four games for San Diego, who have won four of their past five. Manny Machado and Luis Campusano each contribute­d two hits and an RBI to Monday’s victory.

Jackson Chourio went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and a stolen base for Milwaukee, who were held to three singles and three walks in the final six innings. William Contreras extended his hitting streak to 11 games with two singles.

The Padres trailed 3-1 before chasing Milwaukee starter Joe Ross (1-1) with six runs on six singles, a walk, a catcher’s interferen­ce and a passed ball in the fifth inning.

Ross allowed three consecutiv­e singles to begin the inning before Campusano scored on Fernando Tatis Jr’s groundout. The Padres tied the game at 3-3 when Tyler Wade scored on a passed ball, then moved ahead on Machado’s RBI single after Jake Cronenwort­h reached base on catcher’s interferen­ce.

Merrill delivered his two-run single to put the Padres ahead 6-3, and Campusano followed with an RBI single to left field, ending Ross’ outing.

Ross gave up seven runs (six earned) over 4⅔ innings. He walked two and struck out four.

Nico Hoerner scored the tying run with a mad dash on a wild pitch in the ninth and delivered the tie-breaking single in the 11th as the Chicago Cubs notched a 3-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbac­ks at Phoenix.

Michael Busch homered in his fifth consecutiv­e game to tie the Cubs’ franchise record. Hoerner and Garrett Cooper had two hits apiece as Chicago won their third consecutiv­e game.

Jake McCarthy had an RBI single in the second that represente­d Arizona’s lone hit through the first 7⅓ innings. Corbin Carroll added a run-scoring single in the eighth for the Diamondbac­ks, who finished with three hits while losing for the second time in six games.

Cristian Pache hit a walk-off RBI single to right field with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the hosts Philadelph­ia Phillies past the Colorado Rockies 2-1.

Pache’s first career walk-off hit scored Bryson Stott from third base. Pache entered the game in the eighth as a pinch runner for Kyle Schwarber.

Bryce Harper hit an RBI single and Stott had two hits for the Phillies.

Philadelph­ia starter Aaron Nola tossed 7⅓ innings, allowing four hits and one run. He recorded nine strikeouts and one walk.

Seranthony Dominguez (1-0) earned the win in relief.
