Echoes of the divine

“Another Me” invites viewers to discover their innermost thoughts and emotions of ‘another me’ through 20 oil and acrylic paintings by three new generation female artists. They are Buakow Phasom, who has always loved to sketch since she was young and lovingly puts her heart into each piece of artwork; Suvimol Pongsamrit, who has exhibited both locally and internationally; and Pang Torsuwan, who began working in advertising and marketing but turned to painting because of her love of art since childhood.

Timeless muse

“The Visitors” is the first exhibition in Thailand by renowned painter and sculptor Giacomo de Pass, who rose to fame in 60s and 70s Paris. Art on poverty issues
“Same Old” features photographic works that portray poverty and the low quality of life of the working class by Peerapon Boonthep, who used to work in agriculture and construction and saw the world of labour. The artist wants to see the poverty issues highlighted and discussed in order to improve the quality of life of workers and to enable a path out of poverty.

“Meguro Yamaguchi Collection Exhibition” is a Bangkok debut by New York-based Japanese artist Yamaguchi renowned for his Out Of Bounds series that questions boundaries or limitations and explores possibilities of brushstrokes as a quintessence element of painting in the histories of arts. The series are composed of classic yet constantly evolving expressions, diversely vibrant colours, and techniques that he names “cut and paste” and “sampling” inspired from hip-hop culture he has been familiar with from his youth.

“Intersection of Existence” is a group exhibition by eight renowned contemporary artists from Thailand — Gongkan, Kamin Lerchaiprasert, Kitti Narod, Navin Rawanchaikul, Pannaphan Yodmanee, Sakarin Krue-On, Sriwan Janehuttakarnkit, and Suntur. FILM History on screen
Cinema Oasis is screening CSI Death Of King Ananda, based on a lecture on “The King’s Death Case” delivered by Kungwal Buddhavanid. Gripped by the driving need to cleanse and banish all murkiness from the country’s most shameful and forbidden chapter of history — the death of King Ananda, he took on exhaustive investigation and experimentation and began giving forensics lecture on this matter in many settings throughout Bangkok, including Cinema Oasis just before the pandemic lockdown. This absorbing day-long lecture, attended by the public and broadcast live on Facebook by Mr Kungwal, was recorded on two cameras and edited down to 3 hours and 50 minutes, with an intermission.

LECTURE/TALKS Climate change
The Southeast Asian Cultural Heritage Alliance (Seacha) is holding a talk on “How World Heritage Sites are Countering Climate Change” conducted via Zoom by Matthew Hu from the Beijing Cultural Heritage Protection Center (CHP). He will share how the management of some of the Asian World Heritage Sites is responding to climate change issues. He will also cover why climate change matters to the Asian heritage sector, a few case studies from Asian countries, and learnings from countries globally.

Elephant catchers

Siam Society is holding a lecture on “The Last Elephant Catchers? The (In) Visible Indigenous Heritage of the Kui in Thailand” conducted by Alisa Santikarn, an archaeology expert with a BA, MPhil, PhD and postdoctoral fellowship from the University of Cambridge. Based on the results of her PhD research, the talk takes the case study of the Kui people of Surin and their elephant heritage as a means of exploring issues of agency, authority, authenticity, and loss.

Colours in Thai costumes

Thai Textile Society is holding a talk on “The Power of Color in Traditional Thai Costumes” as part of its “Collector’s Corner” programme. Conducted by Pichada Rajavechpisal who was exposed at a young age to many facets of Thai culture and has a passion for Thai costumes, she will recount how court women in the reign of King Chulalongkorn used colour in their attire to differentiate them from the common people’s wear. Outfits representing the colours of the day will be on show alongside men’s clothing of the time. Pichada will then introduce a colour wheel that can be used daily in choosing the right colour for the day.

SCHOLARSHIPS Stem opportunities
The British Council continues its promotion of education opportunities and the role of women in Stem with the “Women in Stem Scholarships” for the fourth year. Launched under the Asean-UK Sage project, this year’s scholarships to provide opportunities for women from all 10 Asean member countries including Thailand who are interested in studying in the UK at the master’s level in subject areas related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The scholarship will cover tuition, accommodation, food, travel, visa, and health insurance. Eligible applicants in Thailand must apply directly to the universities of their interest by each university deadline in April this year.

TRIP Buildings in Sukhumvit
Siamese Heritage Trust is holding a one-day study trip to explore a different side of Sukhumvit and learn about Bangkok’s modern history through its buildings. Led by Navamintr Vitayakul from Siam Society and Chomchon Fusinpaiboon, an expert in modern and contemporary architecture in Thailand and Asia, the trip will take participants to visit Siam Society Auditorium, Wattana Wittaya Academy, Wattana Church, the Embassy of the Republic of India, Ambassador Hotel, Miami Hotel and the Embassy of Switzerland. They will get to understand the importance of preserving these structures.

CONTESTS Musical theatre talent
Glom, Chiang Mai’s groundbreaking theatre group, invites musical theatre enthusiasts of all levels and abilities — dancers, singers or actors — to enter “Chiang Mai Talent 2024”. Positioned as a series of themed talent shows, the competition will host five audition events, each focusing on different performance arts — from circus and street performances to bands and musicians. The first episode will be filmed on April 27 and the firstprize winner will take home 15,000 baht and the runner-up 5,000 baht. Winners will also earn the chance to perform at the grand “Glom Talent Show Extravaganza” in December and earn paid work with Glom on future projects.

Art award
The 2025 “Taoyuan International Art Award” in Taiwan is calling for submissions from artists from around the world including Thailand, until April 26. They can participate as an individual or a group regardless of their nationality or age and are free to submit works of any material, category or size. Entries can be 2D work (painting/photography/ mixed media), 3D work (sculpture/3D object/installation/pluridisciplinary works), video and interactive works (audio/moving image/animation). The grand prize winner will be awarded NT$600,000 (680,000 baht) and three honourable mention winners will receive NT$200,000 each.

Portrait prize
The “Italthai Portrait Prize 2024” is accepting entries from professional, amateur and student artists who are invited to paint the portraits of people who have influenced and left a mark on life in Thailand in some way. Portraits must be created from a live sitting and the artist is required to provide a short story about the sitter. Winner of Portrait Prize will receive 500,000 baht in cash. There are also a Packing Room Prize offering 200,000 baht, a Youth Prize worth 100,000 baht, and the People’s Choice Prize of 100,000 baht for the portrait that receives the most votes from the public. The finalists will have their entry included in the “Italthai Portrait Prize Exhibition 2024” scheduled for Sept 27.
