F1 Thailand event on Rattanakosin Island could get green light
>> A Formula One racing event is expected to be held on Rattanakosin Island, a historic area in Phra Nakhon district of Bangkok, following 3–4 years of preparation, according to the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT).
The move came after Formula One Group’s CEO Stefano Domenicali met Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin recently to discuss staging the highprofile event.
SAT governor Kongsak Yodmanee yesterday said Thailand had studied the possibility of hosting an F1 race for years.
Mr Kongsak said all sides have agreed that hosting such an event would be mutually beneficial. However, several matters must be dealt with, such as copyright protection, race arrangements and local preparation.
“The most important thing is to create understanding among residents of the benefits to ensure there is no disturbance,” Mr Kongsak said.
“I feel more relieved after hearing the F1 Group has certain guidelines on controlling the environmental impact and noise pollution. These measures will be enhanced when the F1 racing takes place in 2027-2028.”
The Formula One Group agreed with the SAT that it might take about 3–4 years to clear various legal hurdles before Thailand can host a race.
For now, the SAT will begin planning, having instructed the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to work on the contractual aspects, Mr Kongsak said.
Mr Kongsak also stressed Thailand’s potential to welcome the world’s richest motorsport, having hosted a MotoGP racing event in the past.
F1 Thailand is initially planned to be staged at night, with Rattanakosin Island as first choice of location. However, the SAT also proposed two alternative routes in Bangkok and another route outside the capital, he added.
