For someone who started off making tin foil shoes for lizards as a boy, Manolo Blahnik has certainly come a long way. The Spaniard has received many awards in his 47 illustrious years as a footwear designer — most recently, the Luxury Legend award from Walpole — but it was Sex and the City that shot him to pop-cultural fame. When the hit American TV show spawned its first movie in 2008, Blahnik specially made a bespoke rendition of his Hangisi pumps in royal blue satin — the shoes Mr Big proposed to main protagonist Carrie Bradshaw with. Ten years on, the Hangisi’s star is shining brighter than ever, with the launch of a limited-edition collection christened A Decade Of Love, comprising exclusive patterns and prints inspired by New York City.
