EDITOR’S LETTER

-

Last month, Rolls-royce Motor Cars celebrated the 110th anniversary of the Spirit of Ecstasy – its official emblem. When the intellectual property of the design was registered on February 6, 1911, a defining feature of the Rolls-royce brand and one of the most famous, iconic and desirable symbols of luxury in the world was firmly established. Almost unaltered throughout her long and storied life, the Spirit of Ecstasy graces the bonnet of every Rollsroyce motor car built at the home of Rolls-royce, Goodwood in the United Kingdom.

In 2020, the Spirit of Ecstasy took on a new life and appearance as part of a wider update of the Rolls-royce brand identity. Known as The Expression, she appears ethereal and regal, yet with a highly contemporary, technological edge that reflects the company’s vision as a modern House of Luxury.

While there are many other highly recognisable symbols of luxury – in some cases something as simple as a brand logo – a concurring definition of luxury remains ever so evasive. The reason for that is that luxury is subjective, but also because the definition is continuously evolving.

Undeniably, the core elements we normally associate with items of luxury remain unchanged: exclusivity, rarity, craftsmanship, heritage, tradition, design, creativity, quality and, consequently, price. More and more, however, alternative definitions of luxury have emerged, such as time, space, fresh air, security, and health – the latter especially considering the times we live in. Indeed, we place an increasingly higher dividend on many things that are so easily taken for granted… and more particularly when you don’t have them in excess.

A visit to celebrity hair stylist and this month’s cover personality Mark Thawin’s glamorous new Maison Mark Thawin Hair & Elite Lifestyle is an experience in itself, even before you meet the colourful and flamboyant proprietor. As our writer aptly puts it: “Today, the plush enclave on Srivara Road has morphed into a baroque wonderland where VVVIP customers flock to have their manes cut, coloured, and coiffed…”

Mark is undoubtedly one of the most interesting personalities on Bangkok’s social scene. His unapologetic approach to life and unique sense of style – less is a bore, frankly – makes him a favourite of photographers and everyone lucky enough to be invited into his inner circle. He’s also sweet and kind in a very endearing way, as the interview with him proves.

Whatever your definition of luxury, you are very likely to find it between the pages of this issue – from the lavish and the rare to the most beautifully crafted, or inspiration to enjoy down-time, fantastic food, or ideas to boost your wellbeing.

Make time for yourself and indulge!
