A Disproportionate Burden
Until October 22
Pichai Pongsasaovapark’s latest art show, entitled ‘A Disproportionate Burden’, is his third solo exhibition with SAC Gallery, and here he continues his provocative approach of manipulating surface textures using nontraditional artistic tools. For these mainly abstract pieces the artist used a 10-ton steamroller to crush flowers, vegetables, coffee beans and sugar cane in an attempt to underscore the dangers of chemicals currently being used in agricultural production in Thailand. In fact, for this series he actually introduced argi-chemicals into his artistic process, deliberately exposing himself in order to fully understand the pain of the farmers (he eventually fell ill, showing that no one is safe from modern farming’s harmful consequences, and what you can’t see can hurt you). Additional works in this series utilise newspaper pages of stock reports as backgrounds, through which the artist reflects on how the economy drives the overuse of agri-chemicals.
