CLASS OF 2021
If there’s one thing I’ve learned during almost 16 years of working in Thailand (with a year-long break in between), it’s that there’s never a shortage of inspiring people in the Kingdom – despite the adversities presented by living in a time of a pandemic, for example. I’m of course referring to our impressive cover personality, Miskawaan Health Group’s Varit “Top” Taifayongvichit (page 50), and the other 39 luminaries that make up this year’s 40 Under 40 list (page 80).
The lesson we can take away from all these individuals is that no challenge is too big, and no obstacle is unsurmountable – if you set your mind to it. Individually, these 40 trailblazers have each made a mark in their respective fields, while collectively they are truly a force majeure!
While some of these bona fide movers and shakers are familiar faces, many are relatively unknown. The common denominator, however, is their unwavering commitment to excel, which they have all done with distinction. Together, they represent a generation of brilliant minds that, fearlessly, pursued their ambitions in oftentimes unchartered waters, and with great success.
My love for high jewellery – especially the precious stones, extraordinary design and craftsmanship that it’s characterised by – is no secret. It’s a love affair that can be traced back to my childhood, growing up in country renowned for being one of the world’s leading producers of diamonds and precious metals. At a very young age I would indulge myself in books and hours of research, while my peers were playing carelessly under the African sun.
This month, we had the honour to do a photo shoot with some one-of-a-kind high jewellery pieces designed by the legendary Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany & Co. (page 68), and seeing these creations up close proved to be quite a thrill. Long after his death, Schlumberger’s legacy continues, and Thai actress and model Janie Tienphosuwan was lucky enough to wear some of his fantastical creations.
We also worked closely with Swiss watchmaker Hublot and Roman jeweller Bulgari this month. The former’s timepieces proved a brilliant complement to the ‘modern gentleman’ style of cover star Varit, while Bulgari’s beautiful watches and jewellery pieces elevated our 40 Under 40 shoot more than just a notch.
As we enter the final quarter of the year with news that Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted somewhat in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand – albeit with the necessary precautions – we look forward to the return of some kind of ‘new normalcy’. Life simply must go on, and we have to learn to live in an altered environment with a whole new set of rules.
Enjoy this month’s pickings, from front to back, and remember to live your best life – as the heading on our cover preaches!
