CITY OF SKY
Until March 19
There’s still time to head to Tang Contemporary Art, where the solo exhibition ‘City of Sky’ by Chinese artist Zhao Zhao is on display. Curated by Cui Cancan, the exhibit presents a series of primarily blue paintings made up of “sky fragments”, culled from Renaissance paintings, antique Chinese paintings, and the shades of blue observed in the many countries the artist has lived in; from the cracks of sky visible between New York City skyscrapers, to the mutable cloudscapes rolling over Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour, to the sea and sky merging in the distance as viewed from a California beach. The 30-year-old artist began creating his Sky series back in 2009, making it his longest-running subject. In these semi abstract works he uses a symphony of brushstrokes to depict these different skyscapes – with strokes of varying length and roughness clearly demarcating rhythms, moods, and shifts between near and far.
