GRAND SEIKO

-

Not only is this the first time in Grand Seiko’s 62-year history that it has produced a mechanical complication watch, this is also the first time in horological history that a tourbillon and a constant-force mechanism are combined as one unit on a single axis. Introducing the Kodo Constant-force Tourbillon. The new mechanism’s motion and its unique sound lend Kodo its signature heartbeat. (Hence the name, as Kodo means “heartbeat” in Japanese.) The inner tourbillon carriage rotates smoothly as the balance steadily vibrates at 8 beats per second, while the outer constant-force carriage follows its rotation at exact one-second intervals. A reassuring heartbeat resonates, set to a 16th note or semi-quaver, made possible by 9ST1 being the movement with the highest frequency ever to incorporate a constant-force mechanism. The watch’s open-work design and sapphire caseback reveal its intricate inner workings. Some parts of its case, constructed from Platinum 950 and Grand Seiko’s Brilliant Hard Titanium, are Zaratsu polished and others have a hairline finish. Its elegance is further elevated by a calf strap – specially treated in the same traditional way used to create the high-durability material of Samurai armours – with a surface that is hand-painted with Urushi lacquer. Also offered with a crocodile strap, the watch will be made available in a limited edition of 20 pieces in October 2022.
