Mauresmo ditches Cup role
Amelie Mauresmo announced on Friday (Thailand time) that she had decided not to captain France’s Davis Cup team and would coach rising star Lucas Pouille instead.
Mauresmo, who would have been the first female captain of any Davis Cup team, was appointed in June to take over from Yannick Noah in 2019, when the Cup will be played under a new single-week format in Madrid.
Noah led France to three Davis Cup victories and ended his third spell as captain last month with defeat to Croatia in the final.
Mauresmo, a former World No1 and double Grand Slam winner, is thought to have changed her mind after the sport’s ruling body The International Tennis Federation, agreed to a drastic overhaul of the tournament’s format.
