Mau­resmo ditches Cup role

Amelie Mau­resmo an­nounced on Fri­day (Thai­land time) that she had de­cided not to cap­tain France’s Davis Cup team and would coach ris­ing star Lu­cas Pouille in­stead.

Mau­resmo, who would have been the first fe­male cap­tain of any Davis Cup team, was ap­pointed in June to take over from Yan­nick Noah in 2019, when the Cup will be played un­der a new sin­gle-week for­mat in Madrid.

Noah led France to three Davis Cup vic­to­ries and ended his third spell as cap­tain last month with de­feat to Croa­tia in the fi­nal.

Mau­resmo, a for­mer World No1 and dou­ble Grand Slam win­ner, is thought to have changed her mind af­ter the sport’s rul­ing body The In­ter­na­tional Ten­nis Fed­er­a­tion, agreed to a dras­tic over­haul of the tour­na­ment’s for­mat.
