Patong policeman struck down by drunk driver

A POLICE OFFICER heading out on patrol on his motorbike was struck down by a drunk driver in Patong in the early hours of Apr 23.

Officers at Patong Police Station were informed of the incident at about 4:30am.

Officers arrived at the scene, in front of Patong Hospital at the intersecti­on of Phra Mettha Rd and Sai Nam Yen Rd, to find Amornlak Bunsiri, 21, from Satun, with minor injuries from the collision.

Pol Sgt Maj Teerayut Samran, a Phuket native, had also suffered a minor injury in the collision, to his right ankle.

Rescue workers from the Kusoldharm Foundation provided first aid to Pol Sgt Maj Teerayut then assisted him into the hospital.

Ms Amornlak told police she was driving her Honda Wave 125 motorcycle northbound along Phra Mettha Rd and ran the red light in order to turn onto Sai Nam Yen Rd.

However, Pol Sgt Maj Teerayut was leaving Patong Police Station to start his patrol on his Yamaha NMAX police motorbike

High: Low: +35° +28° when she collided into him.

Ms Amornlak was taken to Patong Police Station and tested for alcohol, tesing positive with a reading of 114mg per decilitre (a BAC of 0.114)

Ms Amornlak was charged with drunk driving causing injury to others, police confirmed.

Earlier, police had arrested a 21-year-old French national for drunk driving on Phra Mettha Rd.

French national Mehdi Ghandi was stopped and tested for alcohol between 12:30am and 2:30am, police reported.

He tested positive for alcohol with a reading of 63mg per decilitre (a BAC of 0.063).

Mr Ghandi was charged with "driving while intoxicate­d", police confirmed.
