the diagram of modernism: mondrian, malevich and eisenman’s grids
Makbule Aydınsoy | The diagram appears as a representation tool that embodies all the abstract ideas in the human mind. Due to this representation function, the grid has an important role as a diagrammatic expression in visual arts and architecture. This article traces the transformation of grid, which served as a diagram in the modern and postmodern periods, through the works of Mondrian and Malevich who are leading figures in modern painting and postmodern architect Eisenman’s projects. In this process, the grid appears as a powerful diagrammatic tool in the representation of time/movement, infinite space, order/disorder and a network of spatial and formal relations etc. in the context of architectural design.
