THE VICTORY OF MEMORABLE TRIO
On the first day of the Derby meeting at Epsom Downs, Frankie Dettori, under the training of the duo John-Thady Gosden, secured victories in G1 The Oaks with Soul Sister (Frankel-Dream Peace/Dansili) and in G1 Coronation Cup with Emily Upjohn (Sea The Stars-Hidden Brief/Barathea). In his farewell year on the tracks, the renowned jockey increased his tally of Oaks victories to 7 and following his win in the 2000 Guineas with Chaldean (Frankel-Suelita/Duch Art), he achieved his second classic race victory of the season. With this, Dettori's count of classic race wins in England reached 23. Dettori humorously celebrated this accomplishment by saying, "If I stay on the tracks for another year, I might get close to Lester (Piggot)'s 30 classic victories. Just kidding!" John Gosden's number of Oaks victories also rose to 3 with this race.
Soul Sister was the 2nd favorite with odds of 11/4 and won the 2400-meter classic with 2:36.41. She left the favorite, Savethelastdance (Galileo-Daddys Lil Darling/Scat Daddy), 1 ¾ lengths behind to 2nd. The 3rd position in the race was taken by Caernarfon (Cityscape-Royal Ffanci/Royal Applause). Soul Sister, who began her racing career towards the end of her 2-year-old season, had participated in 3 races until that day, achieving 2 victories including one in a maiden and another in a G3 race.
Emily Upjohn won the 4yo+'s The G1 Coronation Cup. The race, covering the same distance as the Oaks, was completed in a time of 2:33.78, and the favorite, Westover (Frankel-Mirabilis/Lear Fan), finished 1 ¾ lengths behind in 2nd place. Last year, Emily Upjohn narrowly missed winning the Oaks, which led to jockey Frankie Dettori facing significant criticism.
This successful thoroughbred, owned by the renowned English composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, was purchased through negotiation for 60,000 guineas from the Tattersalls October Yearling Sales in 2020. In the 7 races it has participated in so far, including 2 Group 1 races, it has achieved 5 wins and a runner-up.
