Fener­bahçe finds re­lief in UEFA Europa League

TURKISH pow­er­house Fener­bahçe breathed a sigh of re­lief af­ter beat­ing Bel­gium’s An­der­lecht 2-0 in the UEFA Europa League at Is­tan­bul’s Ülker Şükrü Saraçoğlu Sta­dium on Thurs­day.

The Yel­low Ca­naries are go­ing through a rough patch in the Su­per League. The win will re­lieve Fener from a lot of pres­sure who are cur­rently placed 15th, just above the rel­e­ga­tion zone.

In the Group D of the Europa League, how­ever, Fener­bahçe is now placed sec­ond with seven points. More im­por­tantly, it is well placed to move on to the next rounds ahead of third-placed Spar­tak Tr­nava (three) and al­ready elim­i­nated An­der­lecht (one). Group leader Di­namo Za­greb has 12 points from four matches.

The other Turkish teams in the com­pe­ti­tion, Beşik­taş and Akhis­ar­spor, did not have a suc­cess­ful out­ing this week.

Beşik­taş drew 1-1 with Bel­gium's Genk on Thurs­day. Akhis­ar­spor, on the other hand, lost 3-2 to Spanish ri­val Sevilla, de­spite put­ting in some good ef­forts.
