Military airstrikes target rebels in Iraq and Syria
The Turkish military said its warplanes carried out airstrikes against Kurdish rebel positions in northern Iraq and in northeastern Syria. The targets, hit in the early hours of Tuesday, are located on the Sinjar mountain area of northern Iraq and a mountainous region in Syria, according to a military statement. It said 40 militants were killed in northern Iraq and 30 in northeastern Syria. The U.S. State Department said it was “deeply concerned” by the strikes. “These airstrikes were not approved by the coalition and led to the unfortunate loss of life of our partner forces in the fight against Daesh (Islamic State) that includes members of the Kurdish peshmerga,” spokesman Mark Toner said.
