U.S. to arm Syrian Kurds despite Turkish objections
The battle for Islamic State’s self-declared capital Raqqa is approaching, and the United States has decided that a Syrian Kurdish militia known as the YPG is essential to secure victory. The Pentagon announced U.S. arms will soon be on the way to YPG fighters, inflaming tensions with NATO ally Turkey. Erdogan said he hopes the decision will be reversed by the time he flies to Washington D.C. for a meeting with his counterpart Donald Trump next week. “We want to believe that our allies will prefer to side with us, not with a terrorist organization,” Erdogan told a news conference in Ankara on Wednesday.
