Turkey spent TRY 29.8 b ll on ($8.17 b ll on) for research and developmen­t act v t es n 2017, the country’s stat st cal author ty, TurkStat, announced on November 28, w th gross domest c expend ture (GERD) n 2017 ncreas ng by 21.2 percent on a yearly bas s. 0.81 percent n 2009. “49.4 percent of research and developmen­t expend ture was f nanced by f nanc al and non-f nanc al corporat ons n 2017,” the nst tute sa d, “followed by general government, 33.6 percent, h gher educat on, 13.3 percent, fore gn funds, 3.5 percent, and other nat onal sources, 0.1 percent.” The off c al report revealed that the total number of fullt me research and developmen­t personnel surged 12 percent year-on-year to reach 136,953 last year.
