TRY 30 billion of mergers and acquisitions
According to the 2018 Mergers and Acquisitions Report, released last week by the Competition Authority, acquisitions of Turkish companies by foreign firms amounted to TRY 13.9 billion out of a total of TRY 30.1 billion worth of transactions in mergers and acquisitions last year.
The number of domestic mergers and acquisitions, including joint ventures where all parties are Turkish, increased from 31 in 2017 to 38 in 2018. As of 2018, the total amount of these transactions reached TRY 10.6 billion.
Turkish companies which were acquired by foreigners were the most traded in 2017 and 2018 in terms of total value. In 2017, 39 Turkish com- panies were acquired by or merged with companies with foreign majority shares. In 2017, the amount of transactions was TRY 9.2 billion. In 2018, 33 Turkish companies were acquired by foreigners. Their total value was TRY 14.4 billion.
In 2018, investors from Italy bought four Turkish companies. Companies from Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Luxembourg each purchased three. One Greek company acquired a Turkish operation. In 2017, the Netherlands and Japan took first place with 6 transactions. The share of foreign investors in the trading volume of all transactions was 49.5 percent in 2018 compared to 68 percent the previous year.
