Turkey receives 61,200+ trademark applications in H1
The Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TurkPatent) received 61,278 trademark applications - 53,645 of them domestic - in
the first six months of 2019. The number of trademark applications increased by
1.4 percent year-on-year in the first half of 2019, according to data released on July
22. The office also received 8,342 patent applications during the same period, up by 6.1 percent compared to the first six months of 2018. 1,358 utility model and 21,559 design applications were also made between January and June. 97.3 percent of utility models and 86.8 percent of the design applications were domestic, according to the data. Last year, the office received 120,008 trademarks, 18,504 patents, 2,770 utility models, and 42,083 design applications.
Newspaper, magazine circulation falls in 2018
Turkey saw an annual decline of 17.6 percent in the circulation of newspapers and magazines in 2018, the country’s statistical authority announced on July 25. TurkStat’s print media statistics revealed that the annual circulation of newspapers/magazines published in Turkey totaled nearly 1.37 billion last year, with 94.2 percent consisting of newspaper circulation. The institute said the total number of dailies, including trade publications, and magazines decreased by 2.6 percent to 5,962, 58.7 percent of which were magazines. “91.3 percent of the newspapers published in 2018 were local, 6.9 percent were national and 1.8 percent were regional. 81.6 percent of the total annual newspaper circulation was national newspapers, 17.6 percent were local and 0.7 percent regional,” it said. TurkStat noted that the country saw a steep fall in the number of daily newspapers, down to 280 last year from 342 in 2017.
