Tourism sector suffering

- SELENAY YAGCI

THE EXPECTED recovery in domestic tourism at the end of May was postponed due to Ramadan, as the number of reservations in domestic tourism facilities increased compared to the previous week. However, foreign tourism still hasn’t picked up. Sector representatives estimate that foreign vacations will begin in September. Firuz Baglikaya, President of the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies (TURSAB) said the sector expects a tourist boom in the first month of fall. Baglikaya said the global tourism sector estimates a 70 percent loss, according to a report published by TURSAB. Since tourists are concerned with strict measures, the recovery in the tourism sector is expected to begin in September and •ctober. Apartment and boutique hotels are expected to be popular during this period.

The total amount of cancellations and refunds in the domestic market may reach TRY 600 million, the report suggested, adding that tourists are panicking because of the outbreak. European countries have already taken various measures to prevent assuage the panic, and Turkey should do the same, Baglikaya said. “People may stop panicking as the government allows domestic flights and ease travel restrictions,” he said. Also, 40 percent of travel agencies are estimating a 75 percent employment loss if the outbreak persists.
