Yavuzkal has performed studies on “choral education and management” with chorus director Szabó Dénes at Prof. Rodney Eichenberger (USA), Wim van Herk (Holland) and Hungary-Cantemus Koral Institutes; on “children's choirs management” with Elisenda Carrasco (Spain), Zimfira Poloz (Canada) and Hirvo Surva (Estonia); on “voice and breathing techniques in choir education” with Panda Van Proosdij (The Netherlands) and on “choir in popular music” with Jonathan Rathbone, music director and editor of Swingle Singers. She has presented her works on “Baroque and Renaissance era choral music compositions” in a CD recorded with her group.
A member of the Vox Europae International Foundation, Gülsen Yavuzkal, is also the founding director of the Koral İstanbul, Turquoise and International Children's Peace Choir, as well as BÇK and continues her work and concerts both at home and abroad. Gülsen Yavuzkal, answered our questions on the Borusan Children's Choir activities, children's music education and the importance of children's choirs.
Why are the children’s choirs important?
It is a historical fact that children's choirs have a great influence on the growth of artists and music lovers, and even the background of many well-known composers are based on children's choirs. In this context, the basic idea stating that the children's choirs are important institutions that influence the art environment of a society and bring a pleasant continuity to life, has been the driving force in the foundation of Borusan Children’s Choir.
Every child should sing but you have to be selective when you want to perform “Polyphonic Choir Music”. Especially after giving a period of education to children who do not have any musical and choral background, we are guiding those who cannot be selected in the process to the other activities by explaining the situation without hurting them. But again, every child, every individual should sing for his/her entire lifetime.
What are the benefits of choral activities to the chilren?
In choral work with children, we are able to follow perceptibly their physical, psychological and social developments. We can see the pleasure and importance of this in the meetings and interviews with our little chorists when they freely express themselves. In addition, the increase in the success of their lessons justifies this observation. The first goal is the social, cultural, physical, psychological development of the child. They are free to continue on their way professionally or take it as hobbies later on. Of course we are leading the ones who want to go on professionally.
If we go into detail, choral education supports psychomotor skills within the framework of community discipline. The child realizes the place and importance of systematic working in life, improves his aesthetics. While he develops attention and concentration, he learns to work, be compatible and cooperate with friends. The sense of self-confidence increases by seeing what has been accomplished. He listens and observes the friends that he is performing with, and learns to stay in harmony. He feels the happiness and responsibility of group work. This provides improvement in language and speaking ability. He enjoys the taste of accomplishing together or strengthens the sense of fellowship and togetherness by sharing the sadness.
A a child who loves music also loves human, society and life. He becomes happy because he has tasted the feeling of being successful...
What kind of a study program do you follow in the Borusan Children's Choir?
We first work as large groups and ensure equal opportunities in education. Children may not even be aware of such a study: to reflect and hear the voice they hear.
This feature can be an inborn ability or trained later. After working on this issue, children who hear the given voice are coming to the second stage. In order to perform the polyphonic music, you have to work with children who hear and give the right voice. But a nice voice is not a must to sing in choirs. It is important to work individually with groups at least twice a week. We are doing posture, sitting, rhythm, voice and breathing exercises. After the repertoire is formed, concerts begin, but the repertoire can vary according to the concert ambience and the meaning of the day. Concert group and back-trained groups continue in two stages.
You carried out many works on conducting children’s choir in many countries. You have had the opportunity to inspect the activities of the children's choirs in our country as well as the other countries. From this perspective, how do you evaluate the activities of children's choirs in our country? In this context, we would also like to ask your advices on the children’s choirs.
I have traveled many countries, including America. I have studied choral and musical education and the analogy with other subjects there. But I have to admit that if we give the proper education to our children they will be successful wherever they go in the world. They can make sharing with different choir groups without disturbing the harmony. I'm not saying that just for the sake of conversation. We applied, did and experienced that. We have performed quite successfully with Austria, Finland, South Korea and adult choral groups. If you train, he will give you the perfection, no matter whether the child is at the top of a mountain, or he is in the middle of a metropolitan jam. It's very important to shape the child, especially shape him correctly.
I give my children the parts of the work in foreign countries, just the compatible ones to my country, adding my own experiences. Differences with other countries; opportunities, educational system, cultural state of countries, etc. But we are now overcoming those, although not easily...
What are your future plans as Borusan Children’ s Choir?
The most important one is to continue singing. To continue “Music Concerts for Children by Children” in order to help them with our voice and breath. Accordingly, to exist in the village, in the city, everywhere, in short, to exist in life and give concerts.
