Two important musicians, Dellâlzâde İsmal Efendi and Mutafzâde Ahmed Efendi accompanied Ismail Dede during his Hajj journey. He taught them the famous Miraciye (It is about Mi’raj, the night journey of Prophet Muhammad. Miraciye consists of 5 parts, the longest work of Turkish religious music) which is nearly forgotten nowadays. Moreover, he composed his final work during that journey, which was in maqam of Şehnaz (one of the maqams/musical notations of Classic Turkish Music) and its lyrics belong to Yunus Emre.

Ismail Dede caught cholera disease on the way back from Mecca. According to the sayings of Rauf Yekta Bey, the progression of his disease was a matter of one day. He could not be saved despite all the efforts and died in the first day of Eid Qurban on 29 November 1846, just like he was born in the first day of Eid Qurban. His body was laid to rest at Khadija’s (the first wife of Prophet Muhammad) feet.

Mutafzâde Ahmed Efendi was taught Miraciye by İsmail Dede. He rendered its practice to Hüseyin Fahrettin Dede who was the last postnişin (someone who holds the central authority in a cult) of Beşiktaş Mawlawi Lodge. Hüseyin Fahrettin Dede is the composer of Acemaşiran (a type of rite in classical Turkish music). Its first performance was on 29 April 1885 in Bahariye Mawlawi Lodge. Having been one of the most notable individuals of Turkish/Ottoman music, he died of cholera on 15 September 1911 at the age of 57. His grave is in Eyüp/Istanbul.

Dedesi Hüseyin Fahrettin Dede’nin 3 Ekim 1854’te Beşiktaş Mevlevihane’sinde doğduğunu, doğum haberinin Hasan Nafiz Dede’ye Hüseyni makamındaki Beste-i Kadim icra edilirken yani mukabele sırasında söylendiğini ve Hasan Nafiz Dede’nin ayinin sonunda gülbang okurken oğlunun adını Hüseyin koyduğunu, Bahariye Mevlevihane’sinin açılışında Zekâi Dede’nin Isfahan makamındaki ayininin okunduğunu sıklıkla anlatırdı.

Having mentioned Hüseyin Fahrettin Dede, we should add that some families’ method of holding the Mawlawi Lodges of Istanbul, was in sequence of father, son, brother and grandchild, like in the post (post is a maqam in Alevi-Bektashi culture) order. Some examples for this family culture are Gavsi Ahmed Dede and Mehmed Şemseddin Dede in Galata, Kütahyalı Ebu Bekir Dede in Yenikapı and Halil Fazıl Dede in Kasımpaşa.

Beşiktaş/Bahariye Mevlevi Lodge followed this tradition too. Hasan Nafiz Dede, Hüseyin Fahrettin Dede’s father, was the first postnişın of the lodge. After Hüseyin Fahrettin Dede’s period, this time his brother, Küçük Nafiz Dede and finally Selman Tüzün, held this Mawlawi Lodge.

During my conservatory years, I had the chance to meet Selman Tüzün with whom I attended to Sama ceremonies. He was frequently saying that his grandfather Hüseyin Fahrettin Dede was born on 3 October 1854 at Beşiktaş Mawlawi Lodge. When Hüseyin Fahrettin Dede’s father, Hasan Nafiz Dede, learnt about his son’s birth, he was in a Sama ceremony, singing a song in a maqam of Huseyni. At the end of the ceremony Hasan Nafiz Dede was orchestrating a gulbank (melodical praying and singing) and during that ceremony he named his son Hüseyin (referring to the song Huseyni). During the opening of Bahariye Mevlevi Lodge, he conducted a liturgy in a maqam from Isfahan in order to celebrate his son’s birth.
