GERİ VER
GIVE IT BACK
Konserlerime gelen anne kızlar görmek beni aşırı mutlu ediyor. İki farklı jenerasyona da hitap edebilmek güzel bir his.
Seeing mothers and daughters at my concerts makes me extremely happy. It is nice to be able to appeal to two different generations.

You took your first step on stage in 2011 with the band Baba Zula. How was your experience with Baba Zula for six years?
Baba Zula was a huge school. I learned many details about my job from them, from how to stand on stage to how to hold the microphone. Above all, I had the chance to give concerts in many cities of the world at an early age, which allowed me to develop my ability to observe the energy which emanates from the audiences of different cultures. In my concerts, I place a lot of importance on the energy emanating from the audience, and often turn on the audience light and ask them how they feel.
Geçenlerde Leonard Cohen’in biyografisini okuyordum.
Why did you leave Baba Zula?
Every story has its beginning, middle and end. We felt the need to set off on separate paths. And then I decided to focus on my solo career. My biggest dream was always to sing my own songs anyway.
What kind of method do you follow while writing your lyrics and songs?
I start with these questions: “What do I want to tell, what is my problem?” Identifying a theme and then thinking and writing about that gives me more motivation, but I have some songs that I personally felt while writing;
For example, “Burning Together” and “Whose Suffering”. I don’t like any unfounded claim when I write or sing a song. If a song is good enough, I don’t need to further embellish it. I am not interested in giant production clips, extreme styling, and a visual world where I don't look like myself.
I was recently reading Leonard Cohen’s biography. He used a phrase like this for a song that took him years to write; “I did not write that song, I went through its suffering”… These words also inspired me for one of my song. It reminds me that I should not procrastinate.
"Ne anlatmak istiyorum, derdim ne?"
“What do I want to tell, what is my problem?”
Kendisi soundtrack’in pek çok şarkısını seçmişti zaten.
You sang three songs in the soundtrack of “Djam” which was screened at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival and which was directed by Tony Gatlif, a director who places a lot of importance on music in the movies he directs and who was awarded the Best Director at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, and you gave a concert before the world premiere of this movie. How did your path and music cross with Tony Gatlif, and how did you prepare for the soundtrack of the movie?
Tony Gatlif came to Istanbul for the shooting of his last movie and he was looking for a singer; they informed me, and I went to meet him. He had already selected many songs for the soundtrack. We recorded the songs with Cumbus Cemaat in the studio prior to the shooting of the movie. When we met for the premiere of the movie in Turkey after the Cannes festival, he said “Let me shoot a music video for you’ and I replied, ‘certainly’, in a thrilled manner, and he shot the music video of my song called “If Loving is a Crime, I’m Guilty”.
Do you think you are one of the common artists of passionate listeners who prefer different styles of music?
I think the age scale is determining factor in this regard. For example, seeing mothers and daughters at my concerts makes me extremely happy. It is nice to be able to appeal to two different generations.
I’m planning some sweet surprises for spring. I’m writing more enthusiastic songs a bit far from grief.
Your last single, “Give It Back”, seems to be quite famous just like your previous songs. How did you write this song, and who else worked on it?
The co-composer Canberk Unsal sent me his composition nearly three years ago and said “Melike, I have a song, would you like to listen to it? Maybe you’d write something about it.” So I wrote something, but for other reasons, we put this song aside and forgot about it. One day, one of my listeners sent me a message on Instagram saying that “you had a song in which you were saying ‘Lean on my shoulder which is not on speaking terms with you’ (he had seen it in one of my stories), ‘Where is that song? When will we get to listen to it?’ So, I wrote to Canberk, and we found the song. Cihan Murtezaoglu arranged it, Altug Oncu, Hakan Gurbuz, Ismail Altunbas, Emin Inal, and, again, Cihan and Canberk played the song. It’s a smooth and clean work, and I’m happy about it.
What’s next?
I’m planning some sweet surprises for spring. I’m writing more enthusiastic songs a bit far from grief. When these new songs are finished, my debut album “Ointment” (“Merhem”) will be ready. I am excited.
