LEVANTINE RHAPSODY
When love is the issue, you have to move quickly and in a very determined way without thinking the next step.
Being a member of artistic family, Didem Başar began her music career at the Istanbul Technical University Turkish Music State Conservatory when she was eleven. Having cooperated with respectable individuals such as Nevzat Sümer, Necdet Varol, Demirhan Altuğ, Yavuz Özüstün, Selahattin İçli and Mutlu Torun, she delivered lectures on kanun, Turkish music and harmony in the capacity of teaching assistant at the Istanbul Technical University Turkish Music State Conservatory, the Haliç University Conservatory and the Istanbul University State Conservatory. She also attended to various radio programmes and organisations. In addition, Başar gave concerts and organised workshops in Turkey, Canada, USA, EU, Morocco, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and in many other countries.
Not only as a composer but also as a new-generation kanun player, she has been continuing her art career in Montreal, Canada since 2007. I spoke with her about her new album, “Levantine Rhapsody.”
I rediscovered the Turkish musician Didem Başar again in Canada.
Although scientists and artists who have left Turkey to settle down in a foreign country usually consider themselves happy, they still express their moodiness of being away from their own culture. Why did you set foot in Canada while you were enjoying a notable career in Turkey not only as an academic but also as an artist?
Love... When love is the issue, you have to move quickly and in a very determined way without thinking the next step. When we moved to Canada with my spouse with our 4 bags and 1 kanun, I was doing exactly the same thing. I can confidently say that I rediscovered the Turkish musician Didem Başar again in Canada. In a short span of time, I reached a very satisfying point in my new music career while I was always keeping my ties with Turkey. Putting aside breaking my connections, quite the contrary, my role as a Turkish musician representing my country in Canada has strengthened them.
You played music in Turkey for a long time and for the last three years you have been producing your art in Canada. From an artist’s perspective, what is your opinion about these two countries?
As you know, Turkey comprises inheritances of many cultures because of its geographical position. Thanks to carrying a highly rich DNA cocktail, Turkish artists are very lucky when it comes to the question of what to produce. The Canadian atmosphere on the other hand, takes its nourishment from the country’s multicultural coexistence. Let’s be honest, being an artist for making a living is an arduous task wherever you are. Although the present level of the Turkish system providing support to the artist as a government employee is currently insufficient, I think its structure is highly well-made. As far as I can follow, in recent years there has been a tendency in private institutions and municipalities in Turkey to give more and more importance and support to the artists. This support is bearing fruits and paves the way for very successful productions. Meanwhile, the situation in Canada is quite different. Instead of providing a civil servant status to artists as provided in Turkey, the Canadian state organises competitions and only supports the ones who are selected during these contests. Therefore, the competition to produce among artists is very fierce. However, as a result of this fierce competition, productivity and fruitfulness emerge at the end of the day. In a country with half of the Turkey’s population but with ten times bigger surface area, one finds more room for manoeuvre as an artist when compared with Turkey. Finally, I would like to add that cold weather and lack of sunny days cause distress. Unfortunately, in Canada muscle and joint problems are frequent phenomena especially among the instrument players.

Canada consists of various people and cultures from various countries of the world. How can you explain the effect of the country’s multicultural structure in your music?
As being a successful kanun player, you also know that the kanun is a favourable instrument for producing modal and tonal music. Thanks to this, now I am trying to produce any kinds of music in any style such as Indian, Chinese, Baroque, Iranian, Arab or Latin to enrich my compositions. I find this very useful not only while playing my instrument but also while composing. In my first year at the Istanbul Technical University Turkish Music State Conservatory, one of my tutors Hakan Şensoy used to tell me that I should be very stingy while composing. Otherwise, my ideas would be consumed in a hurry and wasted. He used to say. “If you put every idea in your head at once, as a composer you will be exhausted quickly”. Keeping this precious advice in my mind, I try to incorporate my new experiences in my compositions at the right dose.
In an era where many artists prefer composing singles and downloading them to digital platforms, why did you release your “Levantine Rhapsody” as an album with 9 musical works?
In 2018, I received an invitation for a concert in a festival organized by Centre des Musiciens du Monde where I also teach Turkish kanun style. It would be a concert for totally new compositions played by an entirely new ensemble brought together for this project. In this way the foundation of Levantine Rhapsody has been laid. Before the concert, we had a long rehearsal period with my band. since I was very satisfied with the production, I would like to record my music after the concert. I submitted a request to the Canadian government to get a sponsorship and after taking the support grant, we recorded the album. The album was released by Analekta which is one of the most prominent recording companies of Canada.

Gelelim Bird Song’a. Guy’in en büyük hobilerinden biri dünyanın çeşitli yerlerinden kuş çağırma enstrümanları toplamak. Fırtına sonrası da Peşrev’in ritmiyle Kantemiroğlu’na bağlanıyor Bird Song.
I must confess that when I listened to “Bird Song”, I was surprised and I questioned why you had composed something like that. In the days of the pandemic I have been listening to “Bird Song” more frequently. I feel that it expresses more when compared with my first time. With what feelings did you create and tell “Bird Song”?
I am very happy to hear that you have enjoyed it because during the recordings, we had also enjoyed a lot. In the album the only piece whose composition does not belong to me is Kantemiroğlu’s Rast Peşrev. This is one of my favourite peşrevs. Arranging this work for my ensemble and playing it with them was an extra joy for me. By adding Kantemiroğlu’s work into my album, whose endless contributions to our music is invaluable, I would like to show how an exceptional composition does sound. In other words, I would like to indicate how a real composition must be.
In fact, we can consider “Bird Song” as a preparation for the peşrev. The atmosphere I wanted to create was to take listeners to the environment of Istanbul at Kantemiroğlu’s time (the 18th century). In Birdsong, you hear birds and raindrops in the serenity of the nature. Guy, who is the flutist of the ensemble and Patrick, who is the percussionist, helped us with their instruments to produce the sounds I wished for. One of the biggest hobbies of Guy is collecting bird calls and whistles from different regions of the world. Patrick’s woodblocks also helped us for raindrop sounds. The recording took place at the
Oscar Peterson Concert Hall which is a large building. Walking between the seats and using our instruments, we imitated a big forest, birds’ flying between tree branches and raindrops. In the end of the storm Bird Song ends up in with the rhythm of Kantemiroğlu’s peşrev.
Her birine teşekkür borçluyum.
All the musicians playing in the album with you are Canadians. It is possible to explain them the scores of the songs. However, how did you manage to tell them the souls of these nine songs, each of which has a very special character?
We had worked together before in different projects Each of them is the master of his/her instrument: flute and bass flute player Guy Pelletier, fiddle player Brigitte Dajczer, violoncello player Noemy Braun and percussionist Patrick Graham are well known musicians in Canada. The very first reason I preferred working with them was their willingness to meet with new experiences. The invaluable contributions of their constructive critics to my music is also an undeniable fact. They played my compositions with great passion and love. They also suggested me to concentrate on making film soundtracks owing to my impressionist personality. Moreover, they are all improvisers which is a rare skill amongst the Western instrumentalists. Listening to the album, I think that one feels the soul of the pitches of the Turkish music from time to time. I had the chance to illustrate them some flavours of the Turkish music during our rehearsals and they gave their best. I owe my thanks to them.
Her şeye rağmen umutsuzluğa kapılmadan üretmeye devam...
Bu ropörtaj için canım kardeşim kanun virtüozu Betül Kaplanoğlu ve Makam Müzik Dergisi Genel Yayın Yönetmeni sevgili Mehmet Şerif Sağıroğlu’na sonsuz teşekkürler...
What are your dreams, hopes and projects in the long run?
How priviledged I feel with the clefs I am holding which can open the doors leading to my dream worlds. As a composer, I will continue to pour my feelings on scores. As an instrumentalist I always tell myself the same thing: “yes, I am playing but a better is possible and transferring my knowledge to enthusiastic candidates is always my goal. Educating students is an endless passion for me. Learning while teaching and discovering myself with every single student have a tremendous amount of satisfaction. Other than in Montreal, I have students from Japan to San Diego, from Mexico to Washington; thanks to the online connections. Especially during these pandemic days, my students' presence and their passion to learn are the major signs for me to see that life goes on whatever happens. Like many other musicians, because of the pandemic I had to cancel or suspend innumerable number of concerts even though I had been waiting for some of them with great excitement. For instance, the concert in with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra where I would be the kanun soloist and the new project with renowned French cello player JeanGuihen Queyras are only two of those cancelled concerts. What can I say? In spite of all difficulties, without feeling hopelessness, the production of art must go on.
Endless thanks for my dear sister and kanun virtuoso Betül Kaplanoğlu and Mehmet Şerif Sağıroğlu, the chief director of Makam Music Magazine.
