PANDEMİ SÜRECİNDE MÜZİSYEN OLMANIN DAYANILMAZ AĞIRLIĞI THE BURDEN OF BEING A MUSICIAN DURING THE PANDEMIC 32
Pandemic is a disease which menaces outrageous numbers of people at the same time. It was the 11th of March when the World Health Organisation declared the covid-19 infection as a pandemic. What had you been doing during those days?
When the covid-19 infection had not been a worldwide issue, I was in the Netherlands within the context of my Europe tour from 5th to 16th of March. The first four concerts were in different cities of the Netherlands. It would be followed by concerts in Belgium and Germany. However, the situation became seriously dangerous across the globe. The number of people in streets was radically reduced but the prohibitions for cultural activities had not yet begun. So we had crowds in our concerts. Actually the prohibition that had come out was for concert halls whose capacities were more than a thousand people. We had not been affected by this. The day when we went to Belgium from the Netherlands, we learnt that the prohibition had been extended and from now on the concert halls with the capacity of less than a thousand people were to be closed too. This meant that our concerts there had come to the end. While we were planning to go to
Germany, we also learnt that flight prohibitions were about to come.
The prohibitions over flights would begin next day. It must be the 10th of March. It was a hard time.
Almanya konserlerimizi o an iptal edip ertesi sabah ülkeye dönebilmenin yollarını aradık. Şu an iyiyim :) …
We cancelled our concerts in Germany too and set to work to find a flight of next morning in order to go back to Turkey. After an extremely difficult and stressful period, we managed to come back to Turkey. When I came back, I was in quarantine at my home for 14 days. In short, I can say that it was an adventurous, stressful and exhausting period. Now I am fine :) ....
We are talking about fallouts materially and spiritually. It is not a demanding issue to observe and see these strugglings as long as one cares about them...
How did the precautions that came out to cope with the covid-19 pandemic affect your career activities? How was the improvement of those effects?
Irrespective of their dimension, every single activity was cancelled or suspended without knowing when it was going to be held. There has been a mass with full of financial losses and yet they still struggle to earn a living. They are on their own during this relentless period. My observation amongst artists was the disenchantment of having been kept away from audiences that emerged first. A feeling of emptiness was formed. This sector is nonexistent without audiences and acclamations. To bind up wounds, artists started to organise a plenty of concerts on social media platforms. Maybe, at the very least, it was a method to find a spiritual satisfaction. As time goes by and the situation becomes more and more severe, the real problem arose: to struggle to earn a living... This is only the artist/musician side of the issue. There are also places, organisers and managers. In short, all parts of the sector are in the same severe situation right now. We are talking about fallouts materially and spiritually. It is not a demanding issue to observe and see these strugglings as long as one cares about them...
They are unable to pay their bills. Even buying bread or getting
a basic material to fix their instruments is impossible right now. You can’t ignore and turn these people down.
Who could deny the fact that in Turkey there are hundreds of thousands of people whose incomes are directly related to music so automatically they are adversely affected by the decline? How do you observe the art workers’ hardships during this period and what are the commitments to make them heard?
There is no one who has not been affected by this situation in small-scale or large-scale. This is crystal clear. Nonetheless, this is only our sector to which any promise or assurance has never come over. The state thinks that we belong to an off-the-book sector so we are being looked down on. They disapprove the idea of supporting a crowd of people who are unrecorded so a tax collection process is impossible but this is not a solution. On no account should the state turn a blind eye to this people. A hand must be given to them. The state is obliged to do it. Scenes are the only livelihood of these people. Doors of scenes are indefinitely closed and for many people financial difficulties are the only truth. Needless to say, they have been in moral collapse. They are unable to pay their bills. Even buying bread or getting a basic material to fix their instruments is impossible right now. You can’t ignore and turn these people down. A state sets a course for art workers, invites and provides support for them. This is the state that holds this obligation. I don’t believe that in Turkey employee associations have come up to the government bodies with problems of other sectors. It is obvious that they have not...
Tek bildiğim, uzun vadede müzik sektörü emekçilerinin bu durumu daha fazla taşımaya güçlerinin olmadığıdır.
The only thing I know is, the music sector workers have no power and ability to cope with this situation in long term.
From your perspective, how do you see the future of musical activities in short and long term? When will the concerts begin?
There has been amelioration in various sectors. The only sector to which this amelioration never approaches is the art and culture one. Although we are in the summer season from now on, there is no clarification about the future of activities in indoor and outdoor places. A total ignorance comes into question here. The only thing I know is, the music sector workers have no power and ability to cope with this situation in long term. The overoptimistic scenario is observing no more increases in the covid-19 cases and in the beginning of the next year coming of the re-emergence of the art and culture sector with other industries.
Sürecin en başından şu ana kadar hem Türkiye’de hem de dünyanın farklı yerlerinde, kendi sektörümdeki tanıdığım tüm profesyonellerle sürekli iletişim halindeyim, gelişmeleri sürekli takip ediyorum. Oralarda vaziyetler bizimkinden biraz farklı ve daha iyi seyrediyor desem sanırım yanlış olmaz. Şöyle ki; geçenlerde İKSV bir bilgi paylaştı ki bence ülkemizin en önemli kültür-sanat kurumudur, paylaşım özetle şöyleydi;
307.5 milyon dolar, Kanada 43 Milyon Dolar, Almanya 50 Milyar Avro, Hollanda 300
Sevgiler...
We must appreciate art and artists because without them the world would be an unbearable place. Be sure of that.
You have given concerts in a vast number of countries and you have occupational connections with these states. What kind of initiatives have come into effect in these countries in order to support music workers who have been severely affected from the measures?
From the very beginning of the process I have continuous communication with art workers and professionals in Turkey and in other places around the world. I keep abreast of all the latest developments. That would not be wrong if I declared that in other countries the situation is way better than Turkey. That is to say, the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts which is the most important institution in the country when it comes to these issues, recently have shared some statistics. The ranges of support from various countries around the world have been announced. This support is being given to those severely-affected sectors, to artists, to creators irrespective of their area of expertise by the mechanisms that have been taken office by these states.
Let’s talk about with some examples of the states’ supports for art and culture sectors: the US 307.5 million dollars, Canada 43 million dollars, Germany 50 million Euros, the Netherlands 300 million Euros, Italy
130 million Euros, France 25.5 million Euros... There are many other countries that have announced several budgets to supports art workers. As far as I follow, some of these allowances have already been given. I am sorry to say that, Turkey is not included through these countries. I think there is nothing to say more...
My final word is I hope the patients will recover health and I commemorate the casualties with mercy and gratitude. We must appreciate art and artists because without them the world would be an unbearable place. Be sure of that.
My best regards...
