Aydilge is a curative artist who illuminates people’s hearts not only with her music but also with her books. Her magic wand showed up again in the captivity days of the pandemic. She became a guest in our hearts and flats with her new album by means of which she told millions of people “Yalnız Değilsin” (You are not alone). Written and composed by her, “You are not alone” finally appeared in digital platforms with its brilliant video clip.
The album has the “#Evdekal” concept which is the Turkish version of #stayhome. In addition to the songs whose lyrics and compositions belong to Aydilge, the album also comprises two folk songs. We have plenty of questions to ask this precious artist. Since we are a music magazine, the priority is always for her music but we will not miss the chance to ask some fascinating details about her writer personality as she is a renowned one! Pandemi sebebiyle herkesin evlere kapandığı ve kaygıyla yetkilileri dinlediği zor günlerde hangimiz yalnızlık hissetmedik ki? “Yalnız Değilsin” hazırdı da insanlığa şifa olsun diye doğru zamanı mı bekliyordu?
“Yalnız Değilsin” aslında benim yıllar önce yaptığım bir parça. Yapayalnız hissettiğim bir dönemde aynaya bakarak bestelemiştim çünkü kendimden başka kimsem yoktu. Şu dönemde herkesin bu hissi çok yoğun yaşadığını biliyorum. Ben de şarkılarım aracılığıyla “seni duyuyorum” demeye çalışıyorum... “Yalnız değilsin kardeşim, maskeler silinince, sen de bensin; sesimi duysan hissedersin...”
Evde albüm yapmak nasıl bir tecrübeydi?
“Yalnız Değilsin” şarkımın da içinde yer aldığı ''Evden Canlı Canlı Vol 2'', bir karantina albümü aslında. İstedim ki dinleyici bana, benim evime gelmiş gibi hissetsin. Akustik tatta, sıcacık, samimi bir deneyim yaşasın. ''Evden Canlı
Canlı'' albümünün özelliği de bu... Üç sene önce ilkini yayınlamıştım. Bu karantina döneminde yeniden canlandırdım ve “Evden Canlı Canlı 2”yi hazırladım. Sevgili eşim Utku Barış Andaç ve Ozan Sarıboğa gibi dostlarımızla herkes kendi evinde olmak üzere canlı çalmanın organik ruhuna özen göstererek kaydımızı yaptık. Kusursuzluğun değil, doğallığın peşindeydik. Hatta kedim Miko da bize eşlik etti. Müziği çok sever. Bütün kayıt boyunca etrafımızda dolaştı. Bir şef edasıyla hepimizi yönlendirdi.
During the days of the pandemic everyone had to be an indoor-locked. Listening to the authorities with anxiety was an everyday activity. Under these circumstances, is there anyone who didn’t feel loneliness? Was “You are not alone” ready and had been waiting for the right time to be a cure for the humanity?
In fact I composed the song “You are not alone” years ago. It was a period when I had been feeling all alone. I looked at the mirror and composed the song because I didn’t have anyone but me. I know that during the pandemic days everyone is deeply experiencing this feeling. I try to tell “I hear you” by means of my songs. “You are not alone, brothers and sisters. When the masks were off, you are also me; if you hear my voice, you will feel this...”
Making an album at home... What kind of experience was it?
The album “Evden Canlı Canlı Vol 2” (Hale And Hearty From Home Vol 2) which consists of the song “You are not alone” is a quarantine album actually. I wanted to make the listener feel as if it was a visiting to my house with an experience full of acoustic, warmness and sincerity. This is the key factor of the album. I released the first version two years ago. I revived the passion during the quarantine days and I made the second one, “Hale and Hearty from Home Vol 2”. Throughout the recording process, my beloved spouse Utku Barış Andaç and lovely friends such as Ozan Sarıboğa were present. Attending to the recordings exclusively from flats, we finished the process by having big respect for the organic soul of a live performance. We were seeking for naturalness, not perfectness. Loving listening to music Miko, my cat accompanied us as well. He was all around us during the recordings. He channelled us with the confidence of a choir master.
“You are not alone”s video clip is awesome. The actors’ pivotal contribution to your song is their support with their meaningful eyes. Since you are unable to go out because of the quarantine, how did you shoot the video clip?
People all around the world filmed their experiences during the quarantine and we put these recordings together. My goal was to show that despite differences, we are all the same. In the clip viewers see themselves, their mothers, their children and brothers. I wish for preserving our personal differences and colours but beyond that we should not forget that we are all human beings.
During our interview with Erkan Oğur, referring to the Anatolian musical heritage “Melodies were under my nose but I had been looking for them in other places” he said. You have a surprise in your album: You sang two legendary folk songs. One is of Aşık Veysel and the other is from Gaziantep region. How is your view towards folk songs and will we see any proliferation in similar choices?
While I was preparing the credits of the series “Benim Adım Melek” (My name is angel) which runs every Wednesday in TRT 1 (The Turkish state channel), I also composed a song with similar soul relating to our folk songs and I named it “Yalnızlık Masalı” (Fairytale of Loneliness) and then I remembered my love for some folk songs, namely “Gaziantep Yolunda” (On the road of Gaziantep). I included this folk song in my new album. Is “Uzun İnce Bir Yoldayım” (I Walk on a Long and Narrow Road - one of Aşık Veysel’s best known works) made exactly for this quarantine time, isn’t it? We are on the move day and night... This is the reason that these two folksongs are in my new album, (Hale And Hearty From Home Vol 2). There are many folk songs that I admire. For instance, I sang “Nemrud’un Kızı” (The Girl Of Nemrud Mountain) with completely different style. This track is also available in my YouTube channel as well. İyi bir müzik dinleyicisi olarak ilk söyleyeceğim; “Aydilge’nin müziğinde bir dirhem melodi fazlası bulamazsınız” olur. “Sade” müzik yapmak zordur zira insanın sesi görücüye çıkar. Şarkılarınızı yaparken göz önünde bulundurduğunuz temel kriterleriniz nelerdir?
Ben en çok insanları dinlemeyi önemsiyorum. Bakın, “dinlemek, sessiz kalmaktan fazlasını gerektirir”. Karşısındakinin sadece söylediklerine değil, bir türlü söyleyemediklerine de kulak kesilmeli insan. Müzik yapmanın anlamı da bu. Ben de o duyulmayan sesleri ve görülmeyen dünyaları şarkılarımla ifade etmeye çalışıyorum. Çünkü hepimiz anlaşılmak, önemsenmek ve duyulmak istiyoruz. Yaralarımız ancak böyle şifalanıyor.
Sekiz yaşında TRT Ankara Radyosu Çocuk Korosu sınavlarını kazanarak 15 yaşına kadar Türkiye’nin ilk Türk Sanat Müziği çocuk korosunda radyo sanatçısı olarak çalıştınız. Türk Sanat Müziği’nin müzikal altyapınızdaki yerini nasıl tanımlarsınız?
Daha o yaşta, radyo sanatçısı unvanını taşımak hem büyük bir gurur hem de ağır bir sorumluluktu. Çok ciddi ve disiplinli bir eğitimden geçtik. Musiki eğitimi de insanı çok olgunlaştırıyor tabi. Hâlâ o namelerin etkileri ara ara müziğimde görülür.
As a good music listener I undoubtedly say that one can’t find a slightest surplus melody in Aydilge’s music. Making simple music is demanding because one’s voice is clearly seen. What are the main criteria when you compose songs?
I care about listening to people the most. “Listening requires more than staying silent.” One must be all ears not only for those words which are being told but also for those are unable to be told. This is the meaning of making music. I try to express in my songs those unheard voices and unseen worlds. We are all want to be understood, noticed and heard. This is the only way to find a cure for our wounds.
When you passed the exam of the Children’s Choir exam of TRT Ankara Radio you were only eight. You worked in the first children’s Ottoman classical music choir of Turkey until you were fifteen. How can you place this experience in terms of your musical basis?
Having the title of “radio artist” in that young age not only was an honour but it also was a big responsibility. We had a severe and well-disciplined education period. Musical education definitely maturates someone. These childhood melodies sometimes can be seen in my music.

I don’t approach to making music from the eyes of a merchant. I do this as a musician. Maybe this is the reason for being chosen.
