NEYZEN DOĞAN ERGİN
Life made me to meet nay players without even noticing it. I am not sure whether it has to do with the magic of nay. Maybe Mawlana’s quote which he says “A nay does not have any sound; it is the fire of love that comes out” or nay players’ moral are responsible for this. In this article I wanted to write about Doğan Ergin with whom I spent time in radio, at my house in Levent, in Çanakkale or in various destinations of the world in 1998 and 1999. However, talking about nay or nay players makes me remember many other things.
If we have a look at the last three centuries by taking a glance at the books relating to nay, we will definitely see names such as Yusuf Dede, Nây-i Osman Dede, Kazasker Mustafa İzzet, Abdülbâki Nasır Dede, Şeyh Said Efendi, Yusuf Paşa, Salim Bey, Aziz Dede, Hüseyin Fahreddin Dede, Neyzen Emin Efendi and Rauf Yekta Bey.
Mesud Cemil Bey’in Ankara Dil Tarih Coğrafya
Fakültesinde 1945 yılında yazdığı Nây-i Osman Dede isimli mezuniyet tezinde “Sazende olarak Osman Dede’yi malesef fonografın icadından evvelki bütün talihsiz icracı musikişinasların mahkûm oldukları ebedi sessizlik perdesi arkasında tahayyül etmeye mecburuz” şeklinde bir cümlesi vardır. Mesud Bey’in tespitindeki “bütün talihsiz icracı musikişinasların” içine yukarıda isimlerini saydığımız neyzenlerin hepsi girmektedir.
Geçtiğimiz Haziran ayının son haftası Ney sanatçısı Doğan Ergin’in vefatının yirmi ikinci senesiydi.
Born in 1941 in Çanakkale,
Doğan Ergin narrated me the incident which urged him to start playing nay: İsmail Dede’s mansion in Ahırkapı Street, in Sultanahmed/Istanbul had been renovated by the Turkish Historic Home Protection Association and it was before its launch. The chairman of the association miss Perihan Balcı asked Doğan Ergin whether he could provide some Sufi clothes such as sikke (a tall, brown hat which symbolises the tombstone and the death of the ego), a black cloak (symbolises death and the grave, which
Sufis remove before whirling), long white robes (tennûre), white jackets (destegül – symbolises resurrection), mest (special shoes) and a nay in order to be exhibited at the newly-renovated mansion.
In Mesud Cemil Bey’s dissertation relating to Osman Dede for Ankara University Faculty of Language, History and Geography which was written in 1945, there is a sentence that says “Unfortunately, we are forced to envisage Osman Dede under a curtain of silence like all of other unlucky musicians who had been born before the invention of record player.” Mesud Bey’s putting “all of other unlucky musicians” comprises the previously-mentioned names. If only they had managed to see the invention of record player, today we would have been able to listen to their marvellous records or conversations.
Last June was the 22nd anniversary of unforgettable nay player Doğan Ergin’s passing away. We lost him during a bailing-hot day of 28th June 1998 in Çanakkale. He had been a member of the Istanbul Municipal Conservatory for many years, he played nay in the Istanbul Classical
Turkish Music Choir and in the radio station (of the Turkish state) and he also served as a conductor and worked as a board member in various positions at the radio station. He was the founder of various state or private foundations with which he represented Turkey not only in Istanbul and Konya but also in the US, Japan, Italy, Germany and in many other countries by organising concerts and Sama ceremonies.
Refik Hakan Talu Doğan Ergin Serhat Sarpel
Ben
Dede Efendi evi için ayırdığı neyi görünce şaşırmıştım. Gelibolu Mevlevihanesi’nden çıkma rengi kıpkırmızı olmuş, akordu ölçüleri yerinde, başparesi orjinal harika bir Şah neydi. Ağabey bunu vermesen çünkü birisi gelir bu neyi alır yerine başka ney koyar yazık olur dediğimde bak sana bir hikâye anlatayım diye cevap vermişti;
Neyzen Doğan Ergin
He ordered the required elements from Konya from his own pocket, packaged the orders and reserved one of the nays in his house as a gift. I was surprised when I saw the reserved nay for Dede Efendi. It was a spectacular nay which had been made in Gelibolu Mawlawi House, with scarlet colour and proper trim, original and fully authentic. I proposed him not to give the specific one for the exhibition lest it would be stolen and right after he wanted to tell a story:
“We were in Çanakkale. It was my last year in my high school. My father was playing oud and the radio had been turned on as usual. One day I heard a sound in the radio. It was oud. I was wondering who the player was. Right after it was announced. His name was Hayri Tümer.
I had relished the sound of it. However, there wasn’t somebody in my city who was an oud player. Thinking for a solution, I decided to send a letter to Hayri Tümer. I specified in the letter that I was from Çanakkale, I was a student, that I had listened to his oud concert in the radio and I had really enjoyed the sound. I also mentioned the lack of oud players in my city and asked him for help in order to find an oud.
Two months later the post carrier knocked my door. ‘Doğan, a sack came from Ankara. It is for you’ he said. It was from Hayri Tümer. He had also sent many materials related to trim and tuners. He had not hesitated to send me many ouds with the accompanying of his long explanation notes. So, if you are to give something, you must give the best one without hesitation. Furthermore, Dede Efendi’s mansion deserves a state-ofthe-art oud.”
I must indicate that Doğan Ergin was a high class nay player. As it is well known, the difficulty in playing wind instruments is lips’ getting tired owing to playing the instrument for long durations. In addition, the overheating of the instrument causes tuning problems. Being taken out of tune owing to this detail is a widely-accepted situation at reasonable levels. I remember that we were playing for long time and Doğan Ergin’s tuning in the beginning and in the end was exactly the same. In addition to that his perceiving for maqams, his explaination of it, his voices, glissandos between octaves and tirades were fully unique.

Doğan Ergin İlk sohbet kaydını 30 Ocak 1971 Cumartesi günü neyzen Ulvi Erguner’in İstanbul Radyosundaki odasında Ulvi Bey’in kendisi ile yapmıştır.
Doğan Ergin is the creator of a maqam which is named as Ferahnâkaşiran. He composed numerous works especially for sama rituals. In the introduction note of his Ferahnâkaşiran liturgy he puts that: “In addition; I dedicate this work to those who helped and supported us (the liturgy) with great interest and passion and to those artist friends who already have or will have an interest for this maqam.”
His close friends would easily realise that those words were explaining his life. Courtesy, grace, kind thought, friendship, gratitude, companionship and feeling of trust were all hidden in his words above. Doğan Ergin’s one of the significant characteristics is his ability to archive documents. Concerning music, he collected a myriad of elements particularly notes and also articles, pictures, microfilms, concert brochures, books, letters and original handwritings.
There is another crucial thing: He bought a Grundik tape and got many important musicians to tell their memories in the Istanbul Radio Station (of the state). It was around 1971 and 1972. He also recorded sections from their instruments and singings. Some of his friends were present during the records in order to ask questions to the interviewees. Kanun players Hüsnü Anıl and Cüneyt Kosal, Kemani Yılmaz Özer, Neyzen Aka Gündüz Kutbay and vocal artist Alâaddin Aday were his assistants during these recordings.
Doğan Ergin had made the first record in January 30, 1971, Saturday with Neyzen Ulvi Erguner at his personal room at the Istanbul Radio Station. I have to mention that, during this recording, the politeness, kindness and calmness of master Ulvi, as well as his interest and courtesy towards the young musicians do stand for a moral today. The other recordings were completed by Doğan Ergin at the radio syndicate room or at the tape monitoring room with the artists who had witnessed the music events of the time. The last one was in June 10, 1972, Wednesday with Carl Singer who was given the name Uzun (tall) Hasan.
